KENT, Ohio - Viktor Sveda, a two-time All-America wrestler at Indiana University, has been named interim assistant wrestling coach at Kent State University, first-year KSU head coach Jim Andrassy has announced. A native of Peninsula, Ohio, Sveda was a four-time NCAA qualifier for the Hoosiers and finished sixth in the nation as a redshirt freshman in 1999 at 184 pounds and third as a junior in 2001 to earn All-America honors. He finished his collegiate career as Indiana's all-time winningest wrestler with 149 wins (149-28), including a school-record 47 pins. As a senior in 2002, he spent most of the season as the nation's No. 1-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds. "I am very happy to have Viktor aboard," said Andrassy. "He brings a dimension we've been lacking on our staff. As a two-time All-American and a four-time national qualifier, he knows how to win at the highest level and can impart that experience to our team." Sveda was an Ohio state champion as a senior at Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls in 1997 as well as an Asics High School First-Team All-American. He helped lead the Warriors to four straight Ohio state titles as well as the 1996 national high school championships. In addition to his high school accolades, he also was a junior national runner-up and a member of the 1996 junior world team. "I hope to bring some of what I know to the wrestlers at Kent State," said Sveda. "It's my goal to help improve the program." Sveda's appointment is effective until May 15, 2004, at which time a search for a permanent assistant coach will be performed. Sveda earned a bachelor's degree in graphic design from Indiana in 2002. He is single and resides in Peninsula.
