U.S. Greco-Roman Team struggles at 2003 World Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan; Russia captures team title

The United States placed fifth in a strong field at the 2003 Greco-Roman World Cup in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Oct. 25-26. Other countries represented included 2003 World Championships team champion Georgia and team runner-up Russia. Russia captured the team title at the World Cup, defeating host-country Kazakhstan 16-8 in the gold-medal dual. Georgia placed third with a 2-2 record, followed by Turkey (1-3) and the United States (0-4). The U.S. team was made up of six wrestlers who placed second at the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials. One of those was 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., who won one of the three U.S. matches before defaulting to injury the rest of the tournament. Byers defeated Mirian Giorgadze of Georgia 6-1 in the final bout of a 20-6 loss to the Georgia team. Giorgadze placed fourth at the 1998 World Championships and was a member of Georgia's 2000 Olympic Team. Byers lost a close 4-0 match to 2003 World bronze medalist Georgiy Tsurtsumia of Kazakhstan in a 22-3 U.S. loss. The other two U.S. victories came at the hands of 2003 U.S. World Team member Justin Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Ruiz defeated Margulan Assembekov of Kazakhstan by a 5-1 score to give the U.S. its only team points in the loss to Kazakhstan. Later, he defeated Mustafa Cetinyurek of Turkey 5-0 in an 18-7 U.S. loss. Ruiz lost matches to 2003 World bronze medalist Ramaz Nozadze of Georgia 9-3 and Vasiliy Teploukhov of Russia 3-2. Three current World Champions and two other current World medalists competed in the event. The World Champions competing were Manuchar Kvirkvelia of Georgia at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Alexei Glushkov of Russia at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Khasan Baroyev of Russia at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Nozadze and Tsurtsumia were the other two World medalists in the competition.
