State College, Pa. - Penn State Head Wrestling Coach Troy Sunderland today announced the addition of former Purdue University All-American Tim Dernlan to the wrestling program as a coaching assistant. "We are very excited to add Tim to our staff," Sunderland said. "He really compliments our staff with his experience and his size, which we feel will allow him to be very effective working with our light weights." Dernlan, who graduated from Purdue in 1998 with a degree in communications and also earned a bachelor's degree in secondary education in 1999, won All-America honors at 125 pounds for the Boilermakers in 1998. He also earned Espoir and University National Championships, was a two-time Olympic Festival champion and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection. Dernlan has continued his close involvement in wrestling after graduation. The eight-time U.S. National place winner has competed in the last five U.S. National Team Trials taking home fourth in 2001, fifth in 1999 and 2002, and sixth in 2003. He has also been active in coaching, serving as a volunteer coach at Purdue from 1998-99 and the Ohio State Club Coach from 1999-2000.
