Gruenwald finishes fourth after semifinal shoulder injury; Team USA finishes 13th

CRETEIL, FRANCE - An emotional Jim Gruenwald refused to be taken from the mat by stretcher after dislocating his shoulder and having to injury default his semi finals match against Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria.     Gruenwald battled Nazarian, a two-time Olympic champion, four-time European champion, and now two-time World champion to a 1-1 tie at the break. Nazarian first scored with a lift, which Gruenwald reversed for a point. Just before the five-minute mark, Gruenwald was called for passivity and put in the par terre position. Gruenwald's left should was dislocated during a throw by Nazarian. A group of medics and trainers attended to Gruenwald on the mat and called for a stretcher. Gruenwald, in tears from the pain of the injury and disappointment from the loss, refused the stretcher getting up on his own and shaking the hand of his opponent.    After Gruenwald's shoulder was put back into place by the USA Team medical staff, Jim only comment was, "I had him."     "Jim wrestled one of his greatest matches this morning.  He had the best guy in the world on the ropes," said USA Wrestling National Teams Coach Steve Fraser. "Unfortunately, he dislocated his shoulder as he was defending the throw.  You could see he was fighting so hard from being turned with the score tied (1-1 at the time).  Jim is a true warrior and gave everything he could against the World and Olympic Champion."    Due to the injury, Gruenwald injury defaulted his bronze medal match to Eusebiu Diaconu of Romania, taking a fourth place finish.    Earlier this morning Gruenwald earned his way to the semifinal match, handily winning a 5-0 decision against Mohamed Ashraf of Egypt. Gruenwald jumped out to an early lead scoring two-points exposure countering a shot by Ashraf, and extended the lead with a two-point gut wrench. Gruenwald scored the final point of the match with a takedown at the two-minute mark in the first period.    Overall the United States team finished in 13th place with 14 teams points. Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist) finishes 4th at 60 kilos, Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) finished 5th at 84 kilos, and Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist) finished in 10th place at 120 kilos; qualifying three of seven weight classes for the Olympics.    The remaining weights will need to be qualified at future events, the first of which is in Novi Sad, SCG (Serbia, Croatia, Hercegovina) Feb. 28-29, 2004, followed by the final qualifying tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on March 13-14, 2004.  `   "We need to regroup and get ready for Greece. We have qualified three weights and need to get the other weights qualified at the upcoming Olympic qualifying events," said Fraser. "This World Championships goes to show you how the playing field has changed.  There are 10 to 12 countries in the team championship race and several of the top countries did not qualify more than three weight classes.  It was one of the most competitive Greco-Roman Championships ever."    At 55Kg, Team USA's Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./MN Storm) went 1-1 placing second in his pool, losing his only match to Olympic and World Champion Lazaro Rivas of Cuba who finished in third place.    Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) also went 1-1 in pool competition at 66 Kg, losing a close 3-1 overtime battle with In-Sub Kim of Korea who went on to finish in the top 10 at 6th place.    TC Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./NYAC) met the eventual world silver medalist at 74 Kg right off the bat in pool competition losing 4-1 to Konstantin Schneider of Germany, but came back in his second pool match beating Mark Madsen of Denmark 4-1 and finishing second in his pool    Brad Vering won three of four matches at 84 Kg, winning is pool competition, a qualification round, but falling short in overtime in the quarterfinals to Fritz Aanes of Norway, who went on to finish one place ahead of Vering at fourth.    Wrestling in place of the injured Garrett Lowney at 96 Kg was Justin Ruiz (Salt Lake City, Utah/NYAC), who placed second in his pool with a 1-1 record.     Olympic and World Champion Rulon Gardner finished at the top of his pool with wins over Eddy Bengtsson of Sweden and Uri Yusiechik of Isreal, but fell 3-0 in the qualification round 3-0 to the eventual World Champion Khassan Baroev of Russia.
