Four-time USA Wrestling Senior Greco-Roman National Champion Randy Couture reached a new milestone by capturing the light heavyweight title of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Friday night at the Mandalay Bay Casino in Las Vegas. After holding the UFC heavyweight title twice before, winning the light heavyweight title made Couture the first UFC fighter in history to have won titles in two weight divisions. What is truly amazing is that he reached this record at age 40. Leading up to the fight, the Las Vegas betting line was fairly even. At fight time, odds slightly favored Couture's opponent Tito Ortiz, who was the longest reigning champion in UFC history when he was stripped of his title due to inactivity. Couture defeated the other contenders for an interim title, setting up Friday's highly anticipated Championship showdown. Ortiz also has a strong wrestling background. A former California Junior College Wrestling Champion, Ortiz left wrestling and began to hone his mixed martial arts skills. Many of the questions leading up to the fight centered on how Ortiz would handle another wrestler with world-class skills such as Couture's. Ortiz claimed, "I've never been taken down in UFC competition and I don't plan to be taken down by Randy". It was clear from the opening round that Couture's takedown skills were vastly superior. The UFC Championship format is five, five-minute rounds. Ortiz was to be taken down repeatedly by Couture throughout the fight. Each round followed the same basic pattern. Both fighters began trading boxing and kicking skills but Couture used superior timing to lower his level and attack Ortiz' legs. Using a double leg attack, Couture either finished with a classic finish putting Ortiz directly on his back, or when Ortiz was able to begin a defense to the double, Couture switched to a single leg attack that produced the same result as the double. Once Couture had Ortiz on the ground and under control, he was able to keep him there. Periodically Ortiz would gain a slight change in position causing the sell-out crowd to roar in anticipation of a reversal. None ever materialized for Ortiz. Couture won all five rounds and was declared the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. Despite having been under Couture's control the entire bout, and having been on the receiving end of long periods of "ground and pound," Ortiz looked almost unmarked at the overflow press conference. When Couture was asked if he would give Ortiz a rematch, Couture replied, "I've never shied away from a fight and if that who they want me to fight then that is who I'll fight next." Ortiz comments included, "Randy's strong, his base was a lot stronger than I expected, by the end of the second round I had nothing left." UFC executives announced the gate was a record $1.6 million dollars. You can still see this fight via PPV Replay throughout the month of October. Check your local listings.
