Wrestling fans have already begun to get excited about the featured contest during the Ultimate Fighting Championship 44: Undisputed, which will be held on Friday, September 26 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Vying for the undisputed Light Heavyweight title are a pair of UFC superstars who were also amateur wrestlers earlier in their careers: Tito Ortiz vs. Randy Couture. Ortiz (11-2-0 in mixed martial arts) from Huntington Beach, Calif., will meet newly crowned interim Light Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture (8-4-0) of Portland, Ore., for the undisputed title in the main event. Wrestling fans take great pride in the success of former wrestlers in UFC competition, and Ortiz and Couture are among the most successful to date. International wrestling fans will remember Randy Couture's long amateur wrestling career, which featured four national Greco-Roman titles, as well as berths on four U.S. Greco-Roman World Teams. After competing in high school in Washington state, Couture went into the U.S. Army, where he started to develop into a talented international wrestler. After his stint in the service was over, Couture competed at Oklahoma State Univ., where he was a two-time NCAA runner-up. He was a 1991 Pan American Games champion, and competed in Greco-Roman wrestling through the 2000 Olympic Trials. Ortiz has a wrestling background prior to getting involved in mixed martial arts. He reportedly competed in high school and college wrestling in California before changing direction and pursuing a career with then UFC. The matchup between Ortiz and Couture has the mixed-martial arts community excited. According to the UFC, this should be a tremendous showdown between two talented fighters. Ortiz has not fought since his title defense last November over mixed martial arts legend Ken Shamrock in Las Vegas. Due to motion picture theatrical commitments, Ortiz could not fight for nine months. Couture met No. 1 contender Chuck Liddell for the interim UFC light heavyweight crown, which Couture claimed with an upset technical knockout in the third round. Couture, a former two-time UFC heavyweight champ, became the only fighter ever to win UFC championships in two different weight divisions. The rhetoric between the two fighters is quite charged. "I don't think Randy is entitled to any kind of championship, much less an interim title, and I'm ready to prove who the real light heavyweight champion is," Ortiz said. "I fought, and beat Chuck Liddell, when he wouldn't fight him. I know the fans see me as the true light heavyweight champion. If Tito disagrees, he's going to have to prove it," Couture responded.
