Frank Shanly, who moderates the Mat Chat radio show from New Zealand, was the international journalist who predicted the most gold-medal winners at the World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in New York City. Shanly picked eight of the 14 champions in the tournament. He was perfect in the women's division, selecting all seven gold medal winners exactly. Shanly correctly picked Irini Merlini of Ukraine, Chiharu Icho of Japan, Saori Yoshida of Japan, Seiko Yamamoto of Japan, Kaori Icho of Japan, Kristie Marano of the USA and Kyoko Hamaguchi of Japan as champions. He received his eighth correct pick when he chose Bouvaissa Saitiev of Russia to win at 74 kg in the men's division. Shanly hosts a weekly radio broadcast about wrestling, which is also available worldwide via the internet. He often has guests on his show from the United States and Canada. Placing second among the journalists, with seven correct picks, was veteran wrestling journalist Ikuo Higuchi of Japan, who is affiliated with the Japanese Wrestling Federation. Like Shanly, Higuchi selected all seven women gold medalists exactly. He did not get a single men's champion prediction correct. Three individuals selected six winners: Gary Abbott of TheMat.com, wrestling fan Sina Etemadi of the USA, and Jack Carr of the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association. Abbott picked five of the women champions, including four Japanese athletes (C. Icho, Yoshida, Yamamoto and Hamaguchi) as well as American Marano. He also had the correct men's winner at 85 kg, Saguid Sajidov of Russia. Etemadi was also correct on five women champions, including four from Japan (C. Icho, Yoshida, K. Icho and Hamaguchi) as well as Marano. In the men's division, he correctly selected Saitiev. Carr had four of the women champions correct (Merlini, C. Icho, Yoshida and Marano), and two of the men's champions correct (Saitiev and Artur Taymazov of Uzbekistan). A number of other journalists participated in the predictions, including journalists from seven nations: Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Turkey, Russia, Austria and the United States. TheMat.com has polled international journalists for their predictions prior to the World Championships and Olympic Games, going back to the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
