NEW YORK- The second session of the World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling provided raw emotion and a complete advancement of the American women's team. All seven of the women's entries advanced to Sunday's semifinals including another big win by Sara McMann, while the men qualified just Kerry McCoy and Cael Sanderson to Sunday's semifinals. Jenny Wong, Toccara Montgomery, Tina George and Patricia Miranda also won quarterfinal matchups, including a pair of four-point victories by George and Wong. At 63kg, McMann got up 4-0 and held on for a 4-3 decision over Alena Kartacheva of Russia, last year's world champion at 59kg. "She's beaten me before, but I felt I should have beat her by more," McMann said. "…a point ahead is a win," she said. Sanderson beat Revaz Mindoravshvili of Georgia 3-0, scoring the three one-point takedowns off his trademark anklepick. "He was pretty defensive. I had a hard time getting to his legs," Sanderson said. McCoy used a three point feet-to-back toss to get ahead 3-0 on Mario Mutalimov of Kazakhstan) and cruised to a 5-0 win. While the women are now 22-0 in the tournament, the men didn't fare as well in the night session, winning two of six matches, including close losses by Stephen Abas, Eric Guerrero and Daniel Cormier. Guerrero was the first to fall, losing 5-3 to Damir Zarkhartdinov of Uzbekistan. He trailed the majority of the match, but tied the match twice before a late flurry on the edge netted two points for Zarkhartdinov, much to the dismay of the American fans and coaches. "As we saw, you can take a five-minute timeout," John Smith, one of the coaches for Team USA, said. After Guerrero tied the bout, he immediately went for a bow-and-arrow leg turn, but as he rolled through the official stopped the hold because it was ruled illegal. FILA had no comment on the officiating of the match. Abas lost a wild 10-8 decision to Ghenadie Tulbea of Moldova, including a two-and-two late in the match where the U.S. coaching staff hoped it could have been two points for Abas and would have tied the match. Cormier tried to wear out Iranian world champion Ali Hedari, but fell 6-3, giving up a late exposure after fighting off a Hedari double-leg. After the match, Cormier shoved Hedari in the back, bringing a bevy of boos from fans from numerous nations. Earlier, Cormier had dispensed with Brazil's Antoine Jaoude in 30 seconds. "I apologize for my actions and I apologize for the fans. It was a tough match, I put a lot of emotion into it and I made a big mistake," Cormier said following his bout with Hedari. "He was just a better wrestler than me today," he added. Despite his post-match shove, Cormier was impressive in his first World Championships. "He's wrestled as well as he has since he's been with me," Smith said. "He's been reel confident in himself." Confidence is flowing through the entire USA Wrestling women's program. A sweep of the four PanAm Games medals in July and now the team has placed all seven to at least a top-four placement. As far as a sweep of the medals, U.S. World Team head coach Terry Steiner said, "Let's say I'm not saying we can't do it, but I'm not saying we will do it." "We have to do the things we talked about for it to happen," Steiner said. McMann's college practice room teammate at Lock Haven, Wong, bested Anne Catherine Deluntsch of France 6-2. Sally Roberts and Kristie Marano didn't have quarterfinal bouts as their pool placement placed them into Sunday's semis. Men: 55kg- Ghenadie Tulbea (Moldova) d.
