Ali Bernard of New Ulm, Minn. (Minnesota Storm) won gold-medal at 67 kg/147.5 pounds at the Junior World  Freestyle Wrestling Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, July 25.    Bernard  defeated Maya Hristova of Bulgaria by a 14-7 score in the championship match.    "She won by a convincing score," said U.S. head coach Rusty Davidson. "It was by far the most exciting match of the finals."    She qualified for the gold-medal match by defeating Canada's Ashlea McManus, 5-3 in the semifinals. Earlier, Bernard defeated Jakhar Geetika of India, 5-2, in the quarterfinals.    Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./Dave Schultz WC) captured a bronze medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Kelly scored a 10-0 technical fall over Yuri Funatsu of Japan in 2:57 in the bronze-medal match.     Kelly was defeated in semifinals by Larisa Oorzak of Russia, 8-0    Alaina Berube (Escanaba, Mich./Cumberland College) placed fourth at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., dropping her two final matches. She lost in the semifinals to Anna Polovneva of Russia, 8-3, and was pinned by Emelia Drzewenska of Poland in 2:48 in the bronze-medal match.    Liz Short (Lombard, Ill./UM-Morris), who advanced from her pool at 44 kg/97 lbs., was pinned in the quarterfinals by Ludmilla Balukhka of Ukraine in 4:19 and did not reach the medal rounds. Her final placement in the standings was fifth.    Two U.S. women wrestlers placed seventh in their weight classes: Brandy Rosenbrock (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Michigan WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Juanita Russell (Galway, N.Y./TNT) at 72 kg/158.75 lbs.    The United States placed third in the team standings. China, with five finalists, won the team title, while Russia, with three finalists, placed second.    "The trophy belongs to eight girls, who all scored points, fought for falls when they were down, scrapped to come from behind, and did everything they could do," said Davidson.
