Popular country music band Sawyer Brown had members of the Greco-Roman National Team and USA Wrestling staff as guests at their concert in Pueblo, Colo on August 19. Sawyer Brown was one of the main attractions in the 2003 Colorado State Fair Concert Series, featuring a star-studded lineup of entertainers who take the stage August 16 - 31, 2003 at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner met the band in Provo, Utah two years ago at a Fourth of July celebration. When he heard they would be at the State Fair, Gardner contacted Sawyer Brown's management group to request passes to the show. Mark Miller, Sawyer Brown's lead singer, was more than happy to host the wrestlers. A group of eight quickly assembled after the Greco-Roman World Team Camp evening practice and hurried to Pueblo to meet up with the band. 2003 Greco-Roman World Team members Gardner, Kevin Bracken, Justin Ruiz, Brad Vering, Greco-Roman National Team members Darryl Christian and Keith Sieracki and USA Wrestling staff members Sara Levin and Jaimie Millward headed south on Interstate 25 for their adventure with the country legends. "We met them at their hotel and followed the tour bus to the fairgrounds. We were treated like VIPs - a part of the group. I couldn't believe how down to Earth and friendly they were," Vering said. The wrestlers watched a rodeo while the band prepared for the show. The wrestlers and USA Wrestling staff members had the best seats in the house, standing just off the stage. They watched the band entertain southern Colorado with an array of the group's hit songs. Sawyer Brown played some of their old fan favorites, such as "Thank God For You" and "Six Days on the Road" while also sharing some songs from their latest album. The band even played some cover songs originally written and performed by The Beach Boys and George Thorogood. Gardner commented on the band's generosity. "It's good to see that so many people respect the sport of wrestling. Mark Miller and the band enjoy supporting our Olympic sports and sharing their time with us. Sawyer Brown has become a fan of wrestling and hopes to stay involved," he said. The band spent just as much time interviewing the wrestlers as the wrestlers did them throughout the evening. It was obvious that they respected these elite athletes a great deal and support them. For 20 years, Sawyer Brown has produced fresh, fun and relevant songs. Comprised of vocalist Mark Miller, keyboardist Gregg "Hobie" Hubbard, lead guitarist Duncan Cameron, bassist Jim Scholten and drummer Joe Smyth, Sawyer Brown is legendary for generating energy, emotion and loyalty with their music and dynamic live shows. On this night, they made some fans for life. But, so did eight wrestlers.
