ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Elizabethtown College has hired Eric Walker as its head wrestling coach. It is a homecoming of sorts for Walker, who is a native of Elizabethtown, Pa. and a 1996 graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School, as he becomes the College's tenth head wrestling coach as the program enters its 50th season of competition in 2003-04. Prior to taking the reins of the program at Elizabethtown College, Walker served as an assistant wrestling coach at nearby Franklin & Marshall College, which, despite being a small school that does not offer athletic scholarships, competes at the NCAA Division I level in wrestling. There, he helped rebuild F&M's wrestling program following a 2-17 dual match finish in 2000-01. In his first season as an assistant at F&M in 2001-02, the team finished 7-15, and in his second season in 2002-03, F&M finished 10-12, posting its highest dual match win total since the 1991-92 season. Walker's responsibilities at F&M included heavy involvement in recruiting, as well as working with athletes directly on the mat and behind the scenes work. Prior to serving as an assistant at F&M, he was a volunteer assistant coach at both Elizabethtown Area High School and Penn Manor High School in 2000-01. A 2000 alumnus of Lycoming College who double majored in economics and marketing, Walker had a stellar wrestling career at Lycoming. He ranks second all-time at Lycoming with 119 career victories, and he was a Middle Atlantic Conference finalist all four years of his collegiate career, winning a pair of MAC titles in 1997 and 2000. He also earned the MAC Outstanding Wrestler Award in 2000, and he was an NCAA Division III All-American in 2000 with a third place national finish. He qualified for the NCAA Division III championships three times over the course of his collegiate career. As a wrestler at Elizabethtown Area High School, Walker won 86 bouts and placed among the top eight in the Pennsylvania state championships in 1996. Walker takes over a program at Elizabethtown College that is in the process of rebuilding following several off years. Blue Jay wrestlers, who compete in NCAA Division III and the Middle Atlantic Conference, have earned All-America honors 12 times and MAC individual championships 36 times over 49 seasons of competition.
