College Sports Council August 15, 2003 Washington, DC As part of our ongoing campaign to restore fairness to Title IX enforcement, the College Sports Council today launched a two pronged legal offensive against the bureaucracy that that has twisted a well-intended law into a quota system. The College Sports Council is a national coalition of coaches, athletes, parents, alumni, and fans from the sports of track, swimming, golf, gymnastics, wrestling, and baseball. The rapid growth of our coalition is fueled by the rising tide of discontentment with the three part test as the measure for Title IX compliance. This set of regulations was put in place over twenty years ago in order to address discrimination occurring at that time. We live in a new era where we now have over 900 more sports teams sponsored for women than for men in NCAA schools. The regulations must be updated to reflect these changes. With the current set of regulations creating a quota system we will continue to see the unnecessary elimination of sports programs and the loss of opportunities for student athletes to pursue their dreams. The CSC supports the intent of Title IX as the law was originally written. Our goal is to one day see a more fair and reasonable set of regulations for Title IX that will continue to protect women from discrimination without harming men.
