A pair of U.S. wrestlers, Jason Kutz and Dominic Black, claimed gold medals in freestyle at the CISM World Military Wrestling Championships held in Istanbul, Turkey, August 2-10. Both champion wrestlers are members of the U.S. Army team, based in Fort Carson, Colo. Kutz claimed the gold medal at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Black claimed his gold medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Kutz won four matches on the way to the title. He opened with an 11-0 technical fall over Saeed Galat of Qatar, then a 7-2 win over Daniel Wilde of Germany. In the semifinals, Kutz edged Tevkit Odabisi of host Turkey, 6-5. His coaches believed that Kutz should have been awarded even more points than what he was given. In the finals, he pinned Nazim Alidjanov of Azerbaijan in 4:23. Black also won four straight times for his gold medal. He won his pool with a 10-0 technical fall over Andre Lenz of Germany and an 8-0 shutout win over Dimitrios Voudouris of Greece. In the semifinals, Black stopped Radoslaw Jankowski of Poland, 6-0. In the gold medal finals, Black faced Recep Kara from host Turkey, emerging with a 4-2 overtime win. Black trailed 2-1 at the end of regulation, and the athletes were placed in the clinch. Black scored a three-point throw to exposure from the clinch to win the match, 4-2. Another U.S. Army athlete, Jason Loukides, claimed a bronze medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Loukides won his first two matches to qualify for the semifinals, where he was defeated by Hakan Koc of Turkey, 4-0. In the bronze-medal match, Loukides defeated Ernest Wojtowicz from Poland, 7-0. In Greco-Roman, the top finish for a U.S. wrestler was turned in by Aaron Sieracki of the U.S. Air Force, who placed fourth at 84 kg/185 lbs. Sieracki won his pool by defeating Leonida Lavreti of Italy, 6-0, then stopping Han Zengfeng of China, 3-0. In the semifinals, he dropped a match to former World Champion Nazmi Avluca of Turkey. In the bronze-medal match, he lost 3-0 to Shota Narmania of Belarus. Sieracki was the only U.S. wrestler to advance from the pool competition.
