Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - The U.S. men's freestyle wrestling team continued their strong performance at the Pan American Games with four more wins in the second session. 2001 World bronze medalist Joe Williams (Coralville, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) advanced to the semifinals with a 10-0 dismantling of Andy Cubas of Peru. Williams captured a gold medal at the Pan American Games in 1999. Two-time U.S. World Team member Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) also won his pool and advanced to the semifinals. Abas defeated Oscar Ruano of Guatemala by a 10-0 technical superiority. Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa./New York AC), a four-time U.S. World Team member, won his second pool match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. McCoy defeated Colbie Bell of Canada 9-0. McCoy will next face Alexis Rodriguez of Cuba, a 1998 World Champion and four-time World medalist. The winner will advance to the gold-medal match and the loser will wrestle for the bronze medal. Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) kept his gold-medal hopes alive at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. with a 5-4 win over Evan MacDonald of Canada. The win gave Kelly a second-place finish in his pool sending him into the round-robin repechage round. The winner of the repechage will advance to the semifinals. Already clinching spots in the semifinals before this session were Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. All semifinalists, except for those at 96 kg and 120 kg, will not know their opponents until the conclusion of the repechage matches. Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) had no scheduled matches at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. in this evening's session. He will wrestle his final two pool matches in tomorrow morning's session. The next round of pool competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. (EST) on August 8 at the Pebellon de Combate in the Olympic Park. Action will include final pool and repechage competition as well as some semifinals.
