Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling medalists Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) and Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) along with U.S. Greco-Roman World Team member Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will compete for gold medals at the Pan American Games on Sunday evening. Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) is also on pace to wrestle for a gold medal. He went undefeated in pool competition and must now wrestle a round-robin repecharge to advance to the medal matches at 60 kg/132 lbs. Justin Ruiz (Taylorsville, Utah/Dave Schultz WC) clinched a silver medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. with two more pool competition wins in the Sunday morning session. "I wrestled pretty good for the most part," Ruiz said of his first major competition as a member of the U.S. Greco-Roman World Team. "I have to work a little bit on my lift and work on my par terre defense. Just to be getting more matches in is going to be a big help." Paulson once again won easily, defeating Erick Caballero of Panama, 9-0 at 55 kg/121 lbs. The 1996 Olympic silver medalist will now face Lazaro Rivas of Cuba for the gold medal, an opponent Paulson has never beaten. Rivas has won two world medals and was a 2000 Olympic silver medalist. "I try to take it match by match, but when you've got a guy like Rivas, that's how you prepare to wrestle," Paulson said of his dominating performance in pool competition. "I am sick of the seconds. I just want to get a gold. I have to control the match on my feet and stop him in par terre." Gardner has spoken of a rematch with Mijian Lopez of Cuba throughout the entire tournament, and he will now get his chance. After defeating Gamalier Coats of the Dominican Republic by a 10-0 technical superiority, Gardner is now preparing to face Lopez for the gold medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. "I received a good draw and got some good warm-up matches. I went out there and executed," stated Gardner, a 2000 Olympic gold medalist and 2001 World Champion. Gardner also stated that this match was the most important so far as he continues his comeback trail from a snowmobiling accident in which he suffered severe frostbite and had one toe amputated. "Lopez beat me 3-0 at the Schultz tournament and then a week later 3-0 at the Titan Games. I want to beat him. I want to beat him 3-0. I want to score a win to see that I am climbing the hill. Every day I get better and better." Vering, fifth in the 2002 World Championships, also dominated his pool competition, defeating Oscar Aguilar of Mexico 7-0 to move onto the gold-medal match at 84 kg/185 lbs. He will now face Luis Mendez of Cuba, a 1999 gold medalist at the World Championships and Pan American Games. Gruenwald will wrestle Luis Liendo of Cuba and Aresenio Mitchell of the Dominican Republic in a round-robin series. The top wrestler will move into the gold-medal match against Roberto Monzon of Cuba and the second-best wrestler will compete for the bronze medal against Sidney Guzman of Peru. Gruenwald defeated Monzon, a two-time World bronze medalist, in pool competition 7-6 in the Sunday morning session. After falling behind 3-0, Gruenwald fought back with a reversal, one point for a caution against Monzon and a two-point gut wrench to take a 4-3 lead. Late in the match, Monzon threw Gruenwald for three points to take a 6-4 lead, but Gruenwald forced a fleeing the mat call to tie the match and then received one point for a lift as time expired to earn a 7-6 victory, the first individual win for the U.S. over a Cuban opponent in this tournament. "That was one of those things that where you lost focus against a guy like that, he will catch you on it every time," Gruenwald said of getting thrown for three points. "In my mind, I only remember the time line of the end of the match, which was I lifted and tried to threw, came down on my belly and heard the buzzer." Wrestling for bronze medals will be Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Bracken will face Luis Fernando Izquierdo of Colombia and Dantzler will match up with Sixto Barrera of Peru. Greco-Roman action will conclude on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. (EST) with the final repecharge matches and all medal matches. Competition will be held in the Pebellon de Combate in Olympic Park.
