Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic - The U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling team has weighed-in and received its draws for competition at the Pan American Games. Greco-Roman action will begin at 9:00 a.m. (EST) on August 2 with pool competition. The U.S. and Cuba are expected to battle for the team title this year, adding great importance to the pool draw. Cuba has won the last five team titles at the Pan American Games. The U.S. has won seven team titles in Greco-Roman overall. Olympic medalists Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) and Rulon Gardner (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) both received favorable draws. Paulson will compete in Pool A while Lazaro Rivas of Cuba, a 2000 Olympic silver medalist and 1999 World Champion, will compete in Pool B at 55 kg/121 lbs. Gardner is also in an opposite pool of his Cuban counterpart, Mijian Lopez, at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Lopez has defeated Gardner twice this year. Gardner will face 1999 Pan American Games bronze medalist Rafael Bareno of Venezuela in pool competition. Olympians Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and Kevin Bracken (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) along with T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Justin Ruiz (Taylorsville, Utah/Dave Schultz WC) will all face a Cuban opponent in pool competition. Gruenwald will face two-time World bronze medalist Roberto Monzon at 60 kg/132 lbs. The two have wrestled twice this year, splitting their meetings. The winner of their pool will advance to the semifinals. Bracken will have to wrestle Juan Luis Maren in his pool competition at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Maren captured silver medals at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, has won five World medals and is the defending two-time champion of the Pan American Games. Dantzler will run into legendary Filiberto Ascuy, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and five-time World medalist at 74 kg/163 lbs. Ruiz, who has added to the team at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. due to an injury to U.S. World Team Trials champion Garrett Lowney, is in a weight class with only five competitors. The weight will be a round-robin competition. His only accomplished opponent will be Ernesto Pena of Cuba, who won a silver medal at the 2001 World Championships. Rounding out the team is Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs., who placed fifth at the World Championships in 2002. Vering will face Edy Bartolozi of Venezuela in pool competition. Bartolozi placed fifth in the 1997 World Championships and won a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan American Games. Cuban Luis Mendez is in the opposite pool of Vering. Mendez was a World Champion and Pan American Games gold medalist in 1999. Greco-Roman competition will take place over the course of three days at the Pebellon de Combate in the Olympic Park in Santo Domingo.
