Wrestle Off Photos Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) scored a takedown in overtime to win 4-3 in the third and deciding match to capture a Special Wrestle-off at 96 kg/211.5 pounds in freestyle wrestling, held in Fargo, N.D., July 25. Cormier will represent the United States at the 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in New York City, September 12-14, as well as at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, August 6-8. Morrison won the first match, 4-1. Cormier came back in the second match, and pinned Morrison in 2:58. Cormier's 4-3 overtime win in the third match gave him the victory. In the third match, Morrison jumped to a 3-0 lead less than a minute into the match, with a takedown to exposure on the edge of the mat. Cormier closed the margin to 3-1, with a caution and one-point penalty with just 10 seconds left in the period. Cormier closed the gap to 3-2 with a takedown in the second period. With 18 seconds left in the match, Cormier received his third point on a penalty against Morrison for fleeing the mat. Just 14 seconds into the overtime, Cormier got behind Morrison for a takedown and the 4-3 victory. "It feels good, really good," said Cormier. "I was a little worried when I got down 3-0. I had to fight hard. No matter how far you are behind, you have to fight hard and hope for the best. That is how champions prevail. Now we have higher goals, to win a World Championship." Cormier's infant daughter was killed in an automobile accident a week prior to the World Team Trials. He has also been dealing with a rib injury that restricted his training. "Everything has been hard," said Cormier. "First, there was the accident with my daughter. Then, I was off the mat for a month with hurt ribs. I did a lot of sprinting and biking. It's not wrestling, but it was hard training." Cormier qualified for his first U.S. World Team. Morrison was also attempting to make his first World team. In the second match, Cormier threw and pinned Dean Morrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) to capture the second match of their and force a third and deciding bout set for 1:34 p.m. Central time. With the match tied at 0-0 late in the first period, Cormier started his throw after an inside trip then tossed Morrison to his back. Officials called the pin at with just two seconds left in the period, at the 2:58 mark. The third and deciding match is set for 1:34 p.m., exactly one hour after the second match ended. In the first match, Morrison defeated Cormier, 4-1 in overtime. The match was tied at 1-1 going into overtime, and Morrison took Cormier to the mat with a body lock from the clinch. The move put Cormier directly onto his back at the edge of the mat, worth three points. Cormier scored first, winning the clinch position at the beginning of the second period, after a scoreless first period. Morrison tied the match at 1-1 with a clean leg attack takedown in the second period. USA Wrestling's Executive Committee granted a delay of the World Team Trials Championship Series at 96 kg/211.5 pounds, after Cormier requested the delay. According to World Team Trials procedures, only the U.S. Nationals champion has the right to request a delay in the Championships Series. Morrison assumed the No. 1 seed at the World Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., June 20-22, and won the event at the weight class, earning the right to face Cormier in the Special Wrestle-off. Morrison needed three matches to defeat 2002 World Team member Tim Hartung (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm). The Special Wrestle-off is a rematch of the finals of the 2003 U.S. Nationals, which Cormier won by a 3-0 margin over Morrison. It was Cormier's first U.S. Nationals freestyle title. Cormier placed third at the World Team Trials in 2001 and 2002, earning a spot on Freestyle Team USA. He competed for Oklahoma State Univ., where he was a NCAA runner-up in 2001. Cormier was also a two-time NJCAA Junior College national champion for Colby CC. He was a three-time Louisiana state champion for Northside High School in Lafayette. Morrison previously qualified for Freestyle Team USA in 1997, when he placed third at the World Team Trials at 187.25 pounds. His second place at the U.S. Nationals this year was his best career finish. Morrison was a 1994 NCAA champion for the Univ. of West Virginia. He attended Copaigue High School in New York.
