Four of five returning champions advance to final day at ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Cham

Five champions returned to the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Championships this year. After the second day of competition, there were only four left standing. The second of three days of competition was held in the FargoDome at North Dakota State Univ. in Fargo, N.D., on Thursday, July 24.    Returning champion Gabe Burak of Colorado was eliminated at 98 pounds and will not be an All-American this year. He lost a pair of matches today, 6-0 to Jimmy Conroy of New Jersey and 9-6 to Walker Faison of Virginia    The other returning Cadet freestyle champions in the field are all still alive in the competition: Patrick McCaffrey of Pennsylvania at 91 pounds, Mike Grey of New Jersey at 112 pounds, Jayson Ness of Minnesota at 119 pounds and Garrett Scott of Pennsylvania at 125 pounds.    The four wrestlers who are attempting to win the first Cadet Triple Crown are still alive in each of their pools: Donny Altman of Kansas (84), Scott O'Donnell of Missouri (91), Louis Caputo of Missouri (171) and Taylor Moore of Missouri (189). These athletes were Cadet Folkstyle National champions in Topeka, Kansas in April, then  claimed the Cadet National Greco-Roman title on Monday night.    There were 15 Cadet National Greco-Roman champions who entered the tournament, but the field has been reduced by one. Dallas Seavey of Alaska, who was the Greco-Roman champion at 125 pounds, lost his second match of the event and was eliminated.     The other 2003 Cadet Greco-Roman Champions all remain in the tournament. They are Mike Thorn of Minnesota at 98 pounds, Henry Cejudo of Arizona at 105 pounds, Troy Nickerson of New York at 112 pounds, Jake Swenson of Utah at 119 pounds, Matt Lopez of Arizona at 130 pounds, Matt Dragon of Pennsylvania at 140 pounds, Tim McGoldrick of Pennsylvania at 140 pounds, Kyle Bounds of Washington at 145 pounds, Alton Lucas of New York at 160 pounds, Erik Nye of California at 215 pounds and Justin Neal of Maryland at 275 pounds. The defending champions that emerged unscathed were Patrick Feeley of Rhode Island at 105 pounds, Paul Donahoe of Michigan at 112 pounds, Robbie Preston of New Jersey at 125 pounds, Ryan Lang of Ohio at 135 pounds, Eric Tannenbaum of Illinois at 145 pounds and Craig Henning of Wisconsin at 145 pounds.    Twelve of the 2003 Junior National Greco-Roman champions are entered in the freestyle tournament, attempting to win a coveted double title. Only one of these Greco-Roman champions did not survive the day.     Joe Weygand of Pennsylvania was eliminated in two straight matches, wrestling up a weight class at 105 pounds. He claimed his Greco-Roman crown at 98 pounds on Monday.    Two Greco-Roman champions remain alive but suffered one loss in the double-elimination format: Brandon Zoeteway of California at 105 pounds and J.D. Bergman of Ohio at 189 pounds.    The unbeaten Greco-Roman champions after a day of freestyle action include Mike Rodriguez of Washington at 112 pounds, Mark McKnight of Pennsylvania at 119 pounds, Dustin Schlatter of Ohio at 135 pounds, Brent Metcalf of Michigan at 140 pounds, Scott Loescher of Oregon at 145 pounds, C.P. Schlatter of Ohio at 152 pounds, Rocky Cozart of Florida at 160 pounds, Luke Hogle of Oregon at 171 pounds and Dustin Fox of Ohio at 275 pounds.    Seven of the 2002 Cadet National freestyle champions are in the Junior draw this year, and all remain without a loss after day one: Alex Herrera of California at 140 pounds, Mitch Smith of West Virginia at 140 pounds, Nathan Matousek of Minnesota at 152 pounds, Mike Poeta of Illinois at 152 pounds, Brandon Mason of Iowa at 160 pounds, Patrick Bond of Virginia at 189 pounds and Kyle Massey of Minnesota at 275 pounds.    Junior National freestyle action begins again at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning.
