Five returning champions still alive after day one of the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Cha

Five champions have returned and all remain alive in the competition after the first day at the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Championships, held in the FargoDome at North Dakota State Univ. in Fargo, N.D., July 23.    The returning Cadet freestyle champions in the field are Patrick McCaffrey of Pennsylvania at 91 pounds, Gabe Burak of Colorado at 98 pounds, Mike Grey of New Jersey at 112 pounds, Jayson Ness of Minnesota at 119 pounds and Garrett Scott of Pennsylvania at 125 pounds.    Only Ness suffered a defeat on the first day, but remains alive in the double-elimination format. He lost his first match of the competition, dropping a 7-3 decision to Jon Reader of Michigan. He rebounded with a 12-2 technical fall over Steve Mytych of Pennsylvania. He followed with a 36 second pin over David Greenwald of New Jersey and an 11-1 technical fall overt T.J. Sailer of North Dakota. His final win was an 11-5 victory over Kenny Jordan of Illinois. Ness was second in the Cadet Greco-Roman division this year.    McCaffrey scored a 13-2 technical fall over Tyler McLaughlin of Montana, then defeated Chase Fish of Washington 11-2. He ended with a 21 second pin over Ibrahim Abdullah of Michigan.    Burak started with a 12-1 technical fall over Zach Hansen of Minnesota, a 11-0 technical fall over Adan Dezwart of Oregon then a third technical fall, this time over Matt Celmer of Montana.    Grey opened with a 10-0 technical fall over Brett Freeman of Ohio. He then pinned Rodney Sager of Utah in 2:26 and Randel Aleman of Nevada in 2:59 and Mike Degliobizzi of Delaware in 0:58. His final victory was a 12-1 decision over James Kohlberg of Illinois.    Scott opened with three technical falls, stopping Jason Hilliard of New York 11-0 and Billy Murphy of California, 16-5 then Lester Brown of Washington 11-0. In the fourth round, he claimed a tight 6-4 win over Brandon Wiest of Missouri. His final bout was a 12-0 technical fall over Bubba Jenkins of Virginia.    Four wrestlers are attempting to win the first Cadet Triple Crown, by winning USA Wrestling national titles in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman during the same year. These athletes were Cadet Folkstyle National champions in Topeka, Kansas in April, then  claimed the Cadet National Greco-Roman title on Monday night: Donny Altman of Kansas (84), Scott O'Donnell of Missouri (91), Louis Caputo of Missouri (171) and Taylor Moore of Missouri (189). All four are undefeated after competition on Wednesday.    The four Triple Crown contenders are among 15 Cadet National Greco-Roman champions from this year who are entered in the freestyle division, attempting to win both styles in Fargo.     The other 2003 Cadet Greco-Roman Champions all remain in the tournament. They are Mike Thorn of Minnesota at 98 pounds, Henry Cejudo of Arizona at 105 pounds, Troy Nickerson of New York at 112 pounds, Jake Swenson of Utah at 119 pounds, Dallas Seavey of Alaska at 125 pounds, Matt Lopez of Arizona at 130 pounds, Matt Dragon and Tim McGoldrick of Pennsylvania at 140 pounds, Kyle Bounds of Washington at 145 pounds, Alton Lucas of New York at 160 pounds, Erik Nye of California at 215 pounds and Justin Neal of Maryland at 275 pounds.    Only Swenson has a loss. He dropped a fifth-round match to Matt Cusick of Illinois, 5-4, after four straight wins.    The two girls entered in the Cadet National Freestyle Championships were eliminated after two rounds, Nicole Woody of Maryland at 84 pounds and Joey Miller of Oklahoma at 91 pounds. Both are talented age-group female wrestlers who qualified for their state Cadet National team competing against boys. Miller's entire day of competition was filmed by Inside Edition, with a feature expected sometime in September.
