Al Kastl of Clinton Twp., Mich. has been named the 2002 Man of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling. This award recognizes an outstanding man for his contributions to the sport of wrestling. Kastl has served as the State Chairperson for the Michigan Wrestling Federation, USA Wrestling's state association in Michigan, for 14 years. He first became involved in USA Wrestling in 1978, when he was an assistant coach for the Junior National team for Michigan. He has served 12 years as the chairperson of the USA Wrestling Greco-Roman Sport Committee, which deals with issues concerning Senior-level Greco-Roman wrestling. He was the Team Leader of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling team, which competed in Atlanta, Ga. and won three Olympic silver medals. He was also involved with a Greco-Roman Developmental Committee during USA Wrestling's early years, helping create the programs and direction for Greco-Roman in this nation. Kastl was a high school wrestling coach for 27 years at Fraser High School, also coaching with the school's football team. He is now athletic director at Chippewa Valley High School. He served as head coach of 1984 Junior World Team, and was assistant coach of the 1983 and 1988 Junior World Teams. Among his other team leader posts were with a Junior World Team and a Senior Greco-Roman World Cup team. Kastl has served with the Junior Olympic Wrestling Committee since its inception, and has been instrumental in building USA Wrestling programs and events for athletes on the age-group levels. He has provided leadership for addressing grassroots issues and needs, and helped the state organizations to increase their influence within the organization and the sport. He has also served as Vice Chairperson of the State Chairperson's Council. Kastl is a member of the Michigan High School Wrestling Hall of Fame, one of four athletic Hall of Fames which have inducted him as a member. Among Kastl's most rewarding achievements is working with many young men who were athletes with the Michigan Wrestling Federation, and have gone on to be successful high school coaches and members of the Michigan coaching staff. He is also pleased that many of the wrestlers from the early Team Michigan programs are now parents of wrestling athletes within the state. USA Wrestling will be honoring its Man and Woman of the Year during a special reception in Fargo, N.D. on Wednesday, July 23, where they will be recognized by their peers at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships.
