J.D. Bergman of Ohio was the only 2002 champion to defend his title, with a dominant victory at 189 pounds at the 2003 ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Greco-Roman Championships in Fargo, N.D., July 22. Bergman needed little time to score 10 quick points then pin Brett Slone of California in 1:13 in the championship finals. Bergman won nine matches in the tournament without a challenge, including six pins and three technical falls. His six pins in 10:10 earned Bergman the most falls award for the competition. It was a tough day for the other two returning Junior National Greco-Roman champions, who were not even able to make the finals this year. Cheney Haight of Utah placed fourth at 152 pounds and Tanner Gardner of Kansas placed fifth at 119 pounds. The highly respected Schlatter brothers from Ohio both won during the gold-medal finals, and they did not disappoint their fans. Both brothers had won Cadet and FILA Cadet National titles, but neither had a Junior National title until this evening. Younger brother Dustin Schlatter captured the title at 135 pounds with 7-0 win over Jake Lewis of Wisconsin. Schlatter scored a pair of gut wrenches in the first period, and scored three more points in the second stanza. Dustin will be a junior in the fall at St. Paris Graham High School. Older brother C.P. Schlatter, a graduated senior, needed only 35 seconds to score an explosive 10-0 technical fall over Joey Hooker of Arizona. After a quick takedown, Schlatter hit a pair of reverse lift throws, as well as a gut wrench tilt, to end the match in rapid fashion. A four-time state high school champion, Schlatter now moves into the college ranks. C.P. Schlatter won all 10 of his bouts, outscoring his opponents 101-1, and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the competition. Talented senior wrestler A.J. Lavender of Illinois won his first Junior National title after a career of success on the age-group levels. Lavender locked up a body lock in the second period and pressed Vlad Kochiev of California for the fall at 3:03. Lavender was second in the 2001 Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman, and was a 2000 Cadet Nationals Greco-Roman champion. Another heralded young star with a Cadet National title on his resume was the 140-pound champion Brent Metcalf of Michigan. He was trailing 2002 Cadet National champion Jason Johnstone of Ohio 4-3 after the first period, then opened up his offense for a 9-4 win. C.P. Schlatter was not the only champion to quickly dispatch his finals opponent. Two other finals matches ended quickly, as wrestlers were able to quickly explode with scoring moves. The finals at 119 pounds ended suddenly, when Pennsylvania's Mark McKnight scored a touch fall on a gut wrench for a pin over Tony Valdez of Nebraska in just 37 seconds. McKnight was fourth in both styles at last year's Junior Nationals. The next match was also a quick finish, as Jordy Crass of Wisconsin scored a number of exposures from the mat for an 11-0 technical fall win over Brandon Shelton of Oklahoma in just 1:25 at 125 pounds. This year's Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman introduced a number of new stars to the sport, as many wrestlers were able to win their first major age-group national title. At 98 pounds, Joe Weygand of Pennsylvania jumped to a quick 8-0 lead, and held off a late attack to defeat Seth Metzler of Kansas, 8-5. Both wrestlers were Cadet All-Americans last year. At 105 pounds, Brandon Zoeteway of California opened up his scoring attack late in the first period to lead 8-2 at the break, and went on to defeat Tony Mustari of Colorado, 8-3. Mustari was second in the 2002 Cadet Nationals in Greco-Roman. In a wild, high-scoring bout, Mike Rodriguez of Washington jumped to a 12-6 lead at the break, and went on to defeat 2002 Junior National freestyle champion Paul Donahoe of Michigan with a 19-9 technical fall at 5:35. There were a number of throws with exposure from both wrestlers, and a few situations that were almost pins. Rodriguez was third in the 2002 Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman. At 145 pounds, Scott Loescher of Oregon scored a three-point throw from the clinch to start the overtime period to defeat Archili Guliashvili of New Jersey, 4-0 at 6:06. Loescher scored the only point in regulation on a counter takedown with eight seconds to go in the first period. Loescher was third at last year's Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman. In an active match at 160 pounds, Rocky Cozart of Florida dominated the second period to defeat Chas Betts of Minnesota, 11-6. Featured in the second-period run by Cozart were a pair of three-point throws. Cozart was a 2002 Cadet National Greco-Roman champion, as well as a FILA Cadet National champion. After trailing 3-0 early in the bout, Luke Hogle of Oregon came back to edge Kurt Brenner of Pennsylvania, 7-6 at 171 pounds. Hogle scored seven unanswered points for a 7-3 lead, but Brenner hit a three-point throw with 12 seconds to go to close the gap to just one point. Hogle was fourth in the Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman in 2002. In an active match among big men, Jake Marquart of Iowa threw and pinned Phil Davis of Pennsylvania at 5:03. Marquart hit a throw at the end of the first period for a 5-4 lead, but Davis jumped back in front in the second period by a 7-5 margin. Marquart then hit another nice throw, and then held Davis for the pin. It was the second year in a row that Davis placed second in the Junior Greco-Roman Nationals. Capping the evening with a 3-2 victory at 275 pounds was Dustin Fox of Ohio, who defeated 2002 Junior Nationals runner-up Jon May of Minnesota. May opened with a 2-0 lead on a gut wrench in the first period. Trailing 2-1, Fox scored a two-point gut wrench with 1:38 to go for the margin of victory. This year's Junior Greco-Roman Nationals included 862 wrestlers from 36 states.
