USA Wrestling is tremendously pleased with the success of the 2003 Senior World Team Trials, which were held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind., June 20-22. The competition was spectacular, the attendance encouraging and the event presentation was world-class. Anybody who made the effort to travel to Indianapolis was provided with outstanding wrestling action, presented in a fashion that makes the sport exciting to watch. Much of the credit for this success goes to our local partners, the Indiana Sports Corporation (ISC), as well as the USA Wrestling state association in Indiana, the Indiana State Wrestling Association (ISWA). Working together, these groups of special people provided the leadership that made the event in Indianapolis the best World Team Trials ever. The Indiana Sports Corporation was pleased to announce that a new attendance record for the competition was set, with 5,853 spectators during the three-day tournament, breaking the mark set a year ago in St. Paul, Minn. USA Wrestling was blessed to work on this competition with the Indiana Sports Corporation, one of the most successful event organizers in the nation. With a staff of experienced professionals, and strong volunteer leadership, the "Sports Corp" knows what it takes to make a sports competition a winner. Since 1979, Indianapolis has hosted more than 400 national and international sporting events, and now a major USA Wrestling competition has been added to the list. We would like to thank and applaud ISC President Dale Neuburger and his entire staff, along with the tremendous group of volunteers that made sure that everything went smoothly. The event management was truly professional, led by Marcie Ahern, Managing Director of Event Operations, and Susan Baughman, Vice President of Event Operations. The publicity and media coverage for the event was also first rate, led by Bill Benner, Vice President of Communications and Jeff Weitekamp, Director of Communications and Media Relations. Many other ISC staffers were included in the team effort for the World Team Trials. Special mention also goes to presenting sponsor Sports Graphics, and individual day sponsors Nestle Purina and Real Pro Wrestling. The arena setup was perfect, allowing fans tremendous viewing angles and an efficient field of play for the athletes and coaches. There was a distinct "look and feel" to the competition, with large screen video and many colorful banners and displays throughout the facility. A number of special clinics and presentations from wrestling experts were held between sessions, as well as autograph sessions and other fan-friendly activities at the Gold Medal Club lounge. The hospitality was superb and the atmosphere electric all weekend. Another reason for the success of the event was the strong local wrestling leadership from the Indiana State Wrestling Association, led by its state chairperson Mike Dowden, ISWA Office Administrator Sharon Dowden and the ISWA Board. The ISWA provided wrestling expertise and support, helping the Indiana Sports Corporation to use its event management talents in the best ways possible for our sport. The strong turnout of wrestlers, coaches and fans from Indiana and surrounding states was also a result of the efforts of the Indiana wrestling community. The United States will have very strong teams at the Pan American Games and the World Championships based upon the results from the World Team Trials. Congratulations to all of the competitors, and good luck to the U.S. team members. The 2003 World Team Trials was a proud moment for USA Wrestling, and something that we can all build upon in the future. The good news is that the team effort that made the World Team Trials so special will stay together to present the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling. The competition will be held in Indianapolis on May 21-23, 2004 at the RCA Dome, the indoor football stadium that houses the Indianapolis Colts. The RCA Dome will be configured in a way to provide a tremendous setting for a wrestling competition. Every four years, the Olympic Trials event seems to get bigger and better, and everybody is aiming to make history in Indianapolis next year. It is not too early to start checking your calendar and making plans to be in Indianapolis next May. Based upon the success of the World Team Trials, we have an amazing opportunity to move wrestling forward next year at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling. You won't want to miss it!
