The Eastern Wrestling League Wrestler of the Week for the week ended December 10, 2000, is TRAP McCORMACK of Lock Haven University. A junior and defending EWL champion, Mr. McCormack helped lead the nationally ranked LHU Bald Eagles to three wins at the Lehigh Duals, which were held 12/9/00 in Bethlehem. In the first match of the day McCormack beat highly regarded Jose Leon of Boston University by a score of 9-3. Lock Haven, currently ranked 16th in the nation in the NWCA/TheMat Division I Wrestling Poll, won that meet over Boston by 32-12. LHU whomped Atlantic Coast Conference stalwart North Carolina State by 26-13 in their second match of the day. LHU head coach Carl Poff held McCormack out of the NC State match, matting McCormack's understudy Justin Owens. LHU's final opponent was MAC power Ohio University, the meet starting at 197 pounds. Lock Haven lost the first two matches, and thus was down 7-0. At that point, Trap took the mat at 125 pounds and stuck his Ohio opponent at 2:10 of the first period. McCormack's pin proved to be the catalyst the Bald Eagles needed, and they soared to a 27-14 win. Lock Haven's dual-meet record this season now is 6-1 We also give a tip of the headgear in recognition of the Pittsburgh Panther wrestling team. Pitt currently is ranked 23rd in the nation, but most fans agreed that their 12/8/00 dual meet against powerful Bloomsburg University was going to be too close to call. Pitt prevailed 21-14 against the Huskies, and the following six Panthers won their individual matches - Joe Crecca at 133, Justin Giovinco at 141, Carl Fronhofer at 165, Dan Stine at 184, David Sandberg at 197 and Jacob Lininger at hwt. Good job Pitt. Congratulations to TRAP McCORMACK, our EWL Wrestler of the Week and to all our other EWL grapplers who competed last week in the greatest and oldest sport on Earth!
