Harnsongkram named USA Wrestling Junior Person of the Year

Sam Harnsongkram of Metairie, La. has been named Junior Person of the Year by USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States. This award goes to a nationally respected leader who works with athletes and programs on the Junior level (grades 9-12). Harnsongkram has served in leadership roles within the state of Lousiana for many years, as well as on the regional and national levels. He is currently the vice chairman of Lousiana USA Wrestling and has served in that position since 1987. Harnsongkram is a top international wrestling referee, holding a FILA 1 as well as a USA 1-E. He has been officiating international wrestling since 1986. He has served as tournament director for numerous USA Wrestling regional and state events, providing opportunities for young wrestlers to compete at a high level. He served as head coach for 32 years at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, La., which has been nationally ranked among high school programs. The team won 18 state titles, including 11 consecutive state championships. He coached an amazing 217 individual state champions during this run of coaching excellence. In 1972, he was the individual who introduced freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling to the New Orleans region for the first time. He is a member of the state chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He was also named Sugar Bowl Coach of the Year two times, and Louisiana Wrestling Coach of the Year 14 times. In addition, he was the Lousiana High School Coach of the Year in all sports two times. He has worked at the ASICS Junior National Championships for almost 20 years, giving his time and expertise to the Junior program.
