Russia has submitted its roster of potential athletes who are expected to compete in the 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in New York City, 12-14 September. The tournament will feature the world's best men and women freestyle wrestlers, competing in the world's most famous sports arena, Madison Square Garden. The World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling is also a qualifying event for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Women's wrestling will be contested in the Olympics for the first time ever in Athens. Russia is considered the dominant nation in international wrestling, with strong teams and individuals in all styles. Russia has named two or three athletes per weight class for the World Championships, and has not indicated which of these athletes will be the entry for New York. Each nation may only enter one athlete per weight division. As expected, Russia will have a full seven-athlete team in both men's and women's freestyle wrestling. In men's freestyle wrestling, Russia has won three of the last five World Team Titles, claiming the top team honors in 1997, 1999 and 2001. In addition, Russia won the medal count in men's freestyle wrestling at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. On the preliminary roster, Russia lists three past Olympic champions: Buvaysa Saitiev at 74 kg/163 lbs., Adam Saitiev at 84 kg/185 lbs. and David Moussoulbes at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Buvaysa Saitiev was a 1996 Olympic Champion, while Adam Saitiev and Moussoulbes won their Olympic titles in 2000. All three of these Olympic Champions have also won World gold medals. Buvaysa Saitiev was a four-time World Championships gold medalist (1995, 1997, 1998, 2001). Adam Saitiev won World titles in 1999 and 2002. Moussoulbes won his World titles in 2001 and 2002. Another World Champion on the Russian men's tentative list is 1997 World Champion Kouramagomed Kouramagomedov, who has now moved up to 120 kg/264.5 pounds. A pair of World medalists from 2002 are also on the Russian lineup: Zaour Botaev, who won a bronze medal last year at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Magomed Isagadzhiev, who won a silver medal last year at 74 kg/163 lbs. The Russian women's team is also very strong, and won World Team titles in 1995 and 1998. Leading the list of Russian women wrestlers is 2002 World Champion Alena Kartacheva at 59 kg/130 lbs. Other past World medalists on the roster are Inga Karamchakova at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Natalia Golts at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Anna Shamova at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.
