The ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships and Cadet National Championships will take place in Fargo, N.D., July 19-26. These events are considered the most prestigious youth events in the nation and have helped develop numerous athletes who have gone on to win World and Olympic medals for the United States. Greco-Roman competition will take place July 19-22, men's freestyle will compete July 23-26 and women's action will be held July 25-26. This will be the second year that a women's division will be featured at the Junior Nationals. The newest Olympic sport will be showcased at the largest wrestling competition in the world this year. Last year, 103 women competed in the inaugural Women's Junior Nationals, and that number is expected to soar this year. The ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships and Cadet National Championships are heralded as the largest wrestling tournament in the world. Over 3,500 wrestlers from 49 different states will compete at the event. Two styles of wrestling will be competed at both the Cadet and Junior levels: Greco-Roman and freestyle. Women will compete in freestyle only. In men's Junior freestyle competition, seven wrestlers will attempt to repeat as champions. Last year, Patrick Feeley of Rhode Island became his state's first Junior National Champion. He will look to defend that title this year. Michigan teammates Paul Donahoe and Roger Kish will also attempt to defend their titles. Kish will attend the Univ. of Minnesota next fall. Other Junior freestyle defending champions expected to compete this year are Robbie Preston of New Jersey, Ryan Lang of Ohio, Eric Tannenbaum of Illinois and Craig Henning of Wisconsin. Preston has been accepted to Harvard, Lang will compete at Northwestern Univ. and Tannenbaum will compete at the Univ. of Michigan next year. In Junior Greco-Roman action, defending champions Vincent Cina of Maryland, Tanner Gardner of Kansas, Angel Cejudo of Arizona, Cheney Haight of Utah and J.D. Bergman of Ohio are all expected to defend their national titles. Gardner will attend Stanford Univ. next fall while Bergman will compete at The Ohio State Univ. In women's competition, five wrestlers will return to defend their titles, as all will be looking to become the first multiple winners of the Junior Women's National Championships. Three of the defending champions, Samantha Lang of Oregon, Brandy Rosenbrock of Michigan and Heather Martin of Ohio, placed at the U.S. Senior Women's World Team Trials in June. Lang placed second while Rosenbrock and Martin both placed fourth in the competition. Lang earned a spot on the U.S. National Team with her finish at the U.S. World Team Trials. Also expected to defend their national titles will be Rachel Holthaus of Minnesota and Amberle Montgomery of Washington. Holthaus was the first-ever women's Junior national champion last year, capturing the crown at 95 lbs. The top 15- and 16-year-old wrestlers in the United States will battle in freestyle and Greco-Roman for national titles and All-American honors at the Cadet National Championships. Many of last year's Cadet national champions in both freestyle and Greco-Roman will compete at the Junior level this year. Returning Cadet freestyle champions who are still eligible to compete at the Cadet level are Patrick McCaffrey of Pennsylvania, Gabe Burak of Colorado, Mike Grey of New Jersey, Jayson Ness of Minnesota, Garrett Scott of Pennsylvania and Mitch Smith of West Virginia. In Cadet Greco-Roman, talented Henry Cejudo of Arizona is the only defending champion eligible to compete at the Cadet level this year. Dustin Schlatter of Ohio, Nate Matousek of Minnesota and Kurt Brenner of Pennsylvania all captured Cadet titles in both styles last year, but will look to make a major impact on the Junior level this year. Other 2002 Cadet champions who will be eyeing Junior-level success are Cory Fish of Washington, Nick Gallick of Arizona, Troy Nickerson of New York, Coleman Scott of Pennsylvania, Jeff Schell of Pennsylvania, Jason Johnstone of Ohio, Brent Metcalf of Michigan, Danny Grater of Kansas, Rocky Cozart of Florida, Andy Lowther of Ohio, Phil Bomberger of Pennsylvania, Jason Marshall of Ohio, Dallon Norton of Utah, Cameron Doggett of Ohio, Alex Herrera of California, Mike Poeta of Illinois, Brandon Mason of Iowa, Logan Downes of Pennsylvania, Patrick Bond of Virginia, Kyle Massey of Minnesota and Tony Johnson of Ohio.
