China has submitted its roster of athletes who are expected to compete in the 2003 World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in New York City, 12-14 September. The tournament will feature the world's best men and women freestyle wrestlers, competing in the world's most famous sports arena, Madison Square Garden. The World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling is also a qualifying event for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Women's wrestling will be contested in the Olympics for the first time ever in Athens. China is one of the world's best women's wrestling teams, and is improving with its men's program. China was the World Team champions in women's wrestling in 2001, and placed 10th in the World Championships in 2002. The 2008 Olympic Summer Games will be held in Beijing, China. China will enter a full seven-athlete women's freestyle team and a full seven-athlete men's freestyle team. The only past World medalist on China's women's roster is Wang Xu, who claimed a World silver medal at 72 kg/158.5 pounds in 2002. She was also the champion at the 2001 Asian Championships. Five of the seven Chinese women wrestlers have competed at a previous World Championships. Xu Haiyan placed fourth at the 2002 World Championships at 63 kg/138.75 pounds. She also captured a gold medal at the 2002 Asian Games and a bronze medal at the 2002 World University Championships. The others with past World Championships experience include Li Hui at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Wen Juling at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Sun Dongmei at 55 kg/121 lbs. Wen and Sun both have placed seventh in the World, with Wen taking seventh in 2002 and Sun placing seventh in 2001. Others in China's tentative women's lineup are Su Lihui at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Wang Jiao at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. On the men's team, Xu Xuangchong is the most successful of the team entries, having placed sixth in the 2002 World Championships at 74 kg/163 lbs. China has Xu listed as competing down one division this year at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Two other members of the team have past World Championships experience: Li Zhengyu at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Li Quan at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Li Jin Long, who competes at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., won a bronze medal at the 1999 Junior World Championships. Others on the men's team roster include Zhou Xiande at 60 kg/132 lbs., Si Riguleng at 74 kg/163 lbs., Man Dula at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Wang Yuanyuan at 96 kg/211.25 lbs. Because of deadlines that have arrived, numerous team rosters are coming into USA Wrestling on a daily basis now. USA Wrestling will make special announcements on the rosters of the most powerful teams that are expected to challenge for team and individual titles. In addition, information on the other teams that send athlete information will be posted as a group. A total of 53 nations have sent in their preliminary registration materials to USA Wrestling, indicating their plans to attend the competition. Other nations are expected to indicate their desire to participate in the upcoming weeks.
