America’s best Veteran freestyle wrestlers to compete at Veterans Freestyle World Championships in B

The 2003 Veterans Freestyle World Championships will be held in Budapest, Hungary, July 31 through August 3. This event will feature the top wrestlers in the world 35 years-old and above. The U.S. is expected to have a team of 35 wrestlers at the competition.    There are five age divisions at the Veterans World Championships, A-E. Division A is for competitors 35-40 years of age, Division B is for wrestlers 41-45 years-old, Division C is open to all wrestlers between 46 and 50, Division D is for wrestlers 51-55 years-old and Division E is for all wrestlers 56 years-old and older.    The U.S. squad will feature 11 Veterans National Champions from 2003, including three-time Veterans World Champion and 2001 Veterans World bronze medalist Shirzad Ahmadi of Coventry, Conn. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in Division D.    Six-time Veterans National Champion Donald Apodaca of Huntington Beach, Calif. will compete at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. in Division E. Apodaca won a silver medal at the 2001 Veterans World Championships.    U.S. Veterans National Champions competing in Division A include Darren Petty of Greensburg, Ind. at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. and Jeffrey Anderson of Elburn, Ill. at 85 kg/187.5 lbs.    Raymond Mohlman of Lake Worth, Fla., a current U.S. Veterans National Champion, will compete at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. in Division B.    Division C will be led by 2001 Veterans World bronze medalist Donald Moore of Williamsburg, Va. at 69 kg/152 lbs. He will be joined by U.S. Veterans National Champions Paul Herder of Montrose, Colo. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and David Eads of Salem, Ore. at 130 kg/286 lbs.    Joining Ahmadi in Division D will be U.S. Veterans National Champions Clifford Ray of Mesa, Ariz. at 58 kg/127.75 lbs., John Bennett of Kensington, Conn. at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Joseph Podraza of Brooklyn, N.Y. at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.    In Division E, two U.S. Veterans National Champions will compete: Wayne Boyd of Palm Springs, Calif. at 69 kg/152 lbs. and Bob Anderson of Chula Vista, Calif. at 97 kg/213.75 lbs.    The U.S. team will be coached by USA Wrestling National Freestyle Developmental Coach and Director of Broadcasting Dave Bennett.    The U.S. did not compete at the 2002 Veterans Freestyle World Championships which were held in Tehran, Iran. In 2001, the U.S. placed second behind Iran with three gold medalists and 16 medalists overall at the Veterans Freestyle World Championships in Martigny, Sweden.    There is no pre-qualification required for athletes to enter the Veterans World Championships.
