Second leg of Triple Crown completed; 10 wrestlers still vying for the coveted award

The top youth wrestlers in the nation have come together in Enid, Okla. for the Kids National Championships, which is the final leg of USA Wrestling's Triple Crown. Following the conclusion of Greco-Roman action on Thursday, 10 wrestlers still had hopes of winning the award. The Triple Crown is captured by winning the Kids Folkstyle National Championships which took place in April, along with the freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions of the Kids National Championships. Riley Adamson of Albuquerque, N.M. is on pace to capture his fifth consecutive Triple Crown after winning the Schoolboy division at 85 lbs. He defeated Nate Moore of Durango, Iowa 8-4 in the championship match. Adamson has won two Triple Crowns at the Midget and Novice levels before advancing to the Schoolboy division this year. Looking to win Triple Crowns for the first time in the Schoolboy division are Shane Nay of Kansas City, Mo. at 125 lbs., Deron Winn of Liberty, Mo. at 160 lbs. and Matthew Campos of Chula Vista, Calif. at 160++++ lbs. Nay won his Greco-Roman championship bout with a second-period fall while Winn dominated his opponent with a 10-0 win. Campos was the only wrestler at his weight class. In the Midget division, Shane Thomas of Tulsa, Okla. and John Sims of Evansville, Ind. are still in the running for the Triple Crown award. Thomas defeated Sammy Shelton of Kalispell, Mont. with a first-period pin to win the Greco-Roman title at 65 lbs. Sims won three matches in a four-man pool to place first and win the second leg of the Triple Crown competition at 87 lbs. Four wrestlers in the Novice division will also be looking for their first Triple Crowns. Sharky Slyter of Paola, Kan. at 65 lbs., Ben Morgan of Catoosa, Okla. at 75 lbs., Jeff Olsen of Marietta, Ga. at 100 lbs. and Mark Myers of Crown Point, Ind. at 105 lbs. Freestyle competition begins on July 4 at 9:00 a.m. in Enid. The tournament will commence on July 5.
