2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) avenged a loss from earlier this season to capture the Challenge Tournament at his division and advance to the finals at the World Team Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling at Indianapolis, Ind., June 21. Gardner scored a 3-1 overtime victory over Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) in the Challenge Tournament finals. Gardner, leading 2-1 after regulation ended, scored a one-point takedown from the clinch in overtime to win the match. Earlier in the bout, Farkas was tossed off the mat and platform out of bounds by Gardner, but was able to continue after receiving medical attention. Farkas had beaten Gardner 4-2 in overtime at the semifinals at the U.S. Nationals in May. The two athletes are regular training partners at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Gardner's win allows him to advance to the Championship Finals against 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) on Sunday. The winners of the best-of-three series on Sunday will capture the tournament and earn the right to represent the USA at the 2003 World Championships and 2003 Pan American Games. Also winning the Challenge Tournament at 163 pounds was T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who defeated Ken Cook (Fremont, Calif./Sunkist Kids), 6-0 in the finals. Dantzler, who was a 2002 U.S. World Team member, had been defeated by Cook during the 2003 U.S. Nationals in the semifinals. Dantzler earned the right to compete against 2003 U.S. Nationals Champion and long-time rival Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in best-of-three series on Sunday. Dantzler defeated Sieracki in the finals of the 2002 World Team Trials. Winning the Challenge Tournament at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. for the second straight year was Justin Ruiz (Taylorsville, Utah/Dave Schultz WC), who beat Frank Workman (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps), 4-0 in the finals match. He will advance to Sunday's Championship Series against 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm). Last year, Ruiz won the Challenge Tournament to advance to the finals against Lowney, but chose not to compete due to religious reasons. The finals series was held on a Sunday, and Ruiz, a Mormon, chose not to compete on the Sabbath. After his victory today, Ruiz indicated that he will wrestle against Lowney tomorrow, even though the finals again will be held on Sunday. By winning their Challenge Tournament finals, two athletes will get the chance to avenge losses from the 2003 U.S. Nationals finals in the Championship Series on Sunday: Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) 60 kg/132 lbs. Durlacher controlled Anthony Gibbons (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 7-0 in the Challenge Tournament finals. He will now face 1996 Olympic silver medalist Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) in the best-of-three series on Sunday. Paulson has defeated Durlacher in the U.S. Nationals finals for two straight years, and also in the 2002 World Team Trials. Nieradka advanced to Sunday's finals, with a 2-1 overtime win over 1996 Olympic silver medalist Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids). Nieradka will now get another chance to face 2003 U.S. Nationals Champion Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), who beat Nieradka in the U.S. Nationals finals this year and the World Team Trials finals last year. In an all-Marines final at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., James Shillow (Fredricksburg, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) defeated teammate Marcel Cooper (Woodbridge, Va./U.S. Marine Corps), 4-3 in overtime. The match was tied at 3-3 in regulation, and Shillow scored the winning point just 25 seconds into the extra session. Another U.S. Marines athlete advanced to the finals series at 84 kg/185 lbs., as Jake Clark (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) edged Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), 10-8 in overtime. It was the most wide-open bout of the finals round, as the lead changed hands a number of times during the regulation period. Clark scored a two-point reversal from the bottom, defending against an exposure attempt by Bosch. Clark will now face 2003 U.S. Nationals Champion Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the finals series on Sunday. The Challenge Tournaments for men's and women's freestyle will be concluded on Saturday evening.
