Senior University of Minnesota student-athletes Jared Lawrence (Sandpoint, Idaho/ Sandpoint HS) and Shani Marks (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley HS) were named the recipients of the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor for the 2002-03 academic year. Lawrence, a wrestler, and Marks, a track & field athlete, earned the highest award bestowed upon a student-athlete in the Big Ten Conference. Each Big Ten school selects a senior student-athlete who represents the very best achievements in all areas: academic excellence, athletic achievement and leadership. Lawrence, the 2002 149-pound NCAA Champion, became only the third wrestler to earn All-America honors in all four years of his career. An NCAA runner-up in 2003, Lawrence finished his career sixth in all-time career wins at Minnesota with a 130-23 record and third in dual meet wins with a 66-11 mark. He ranks sixth in career pins with 33 and eighth in win percentage at .850. Lawrence captured the 2001 and '03 Big Ten title at 149 pounds with runner-up finishes in '00 and '02. At the NCAA Championships, he placed sixth in 2000 and '01, before finishing first in '02 and second in '03. This summer, Lawrence will complete his degree in an intercollege degree program. Lawrence is the fourth wrestler in five years to earn the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Owen Elzen was awarded the honor last year. Last weekend, Marks ended her career with her finest season in the Maroon and Gold, capturing second place in the triple jump at NCAAs with an effort of 45-0 1/2 to earn her third All-America honor in the event. She became only the seventh Golden Gopher to place second in an event at the NCAA Championships. The school, Big Ten and Big Ten Championships record holder in the outdoor triple jump, Marks is a three-time All-American and a four-time Big Ten Champion in both the indoor and outdoor seasons in several events. In addition to her prowess in the triple jump, Marks is a standout in the long jump, 4x100 and 4x400 relays, 600 meters, and 400 hurdles. She is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a 2002-03 Academic All-American. Marks has earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota.
