A pair of past Olympic medalists, 2000 Olympic Champion Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and 1996 Olympic silver medalist Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) won their bouts on Friday to advance to the finals of the Challenge Tournament at their weights at the World Team Trials. Action began at this major event today, which will be held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. through Sunday, June 22. Gardner defeated Paul Devlin (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 3-0, in the Challenge Tournament semifinals. He will face Corey Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) in the Challenge Tournament finals on Saturday. Farkas beat Nick Severson (Hayberry, Minn./Minnesota Storm), 6-0 in his semifinal match. Farkas upset Gardner in the semifinals of the U.S. Nationals in May. The winner of the Gardner/Farkas match on Saturday will battle top seed and 2002 World Champion Dremiel Byers in the Championship Series on Sunday. Hall advanced to the Challenge Tournament finals with a 3-1 win over Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC). The other semifinal winner was Glenn Nieradka (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), who edged dec. Jacob Hey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force), 3-2 in overtime. The winner of the Hall vs. Nieradka match on Saturday will battle 2000 Olympian James Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in the Championship Series on Sunday. This competition determines the U.S. teams for the 2003 World Championships and the 2003 Pan American Games. There is a two-day Challenge Tournament, where only the winner in each weight class moves on to the final day. The Championships Series is a best-of-three series between the 2003 U.S. Nationals champion and the Challenge Tournament winner. The biggest upset came at 96 kg/211.5 pounds, where 2003 U.S. Nationals runner-up Philip Johnston (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) lost by a 8-1 margin to Frank Workman (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps). Johnston was the top seed in the Challenge Tournament at his weight class. The victory placed Workman in the Challenge Tournament finals on Saturday, where he will battle Justin Ruiz (Taylorsville, Utah/Dave Schultz WC). Another Challenge Tournament top seed who was defeated in the semifinals was Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC), who dropped a 4-0 decision to 2001 World Team member Marcel Cooper (Woodbridge, Va./U.S. Marine Corps). Cooper's win set up an all-Marine Challenge Tournament finals, where he will face James Shillow (Fredricksburg, Va./U.S. Marine Corps). Other top seeds in the Challenge Tournament that advanced to the finals on Saturday also included Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Ken Cook (Fremont, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Jake Clark (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) at 84 kg/185 lbs.
