The Executive Committee of USA Wrestling, in its conference call meeting on Monday, June 16, approved a delay in the Championship Series at 96 kg/211.5 pounds in freestyle wrestling, as requested by 2003 U.S. Nationals champion Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC). The World Team Trials will be held at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind., June 20-22. Dean Morrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), who placed second at the U.S. Nationals to Cormier in May, will move into the No. 1 seed for the competition. Morrison will not compete in the Challenge Tournament, which is held on Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21. He will be in the Championships Series on Sunday, June 22, a best-of-three series against the winner of the Challenge Tournament. A Special Wrestle-off will be scheduled for a date and location to be determined. Cormier will battle the winner of the World Team Trials in a best-of-three series, with the winner earning the spot on the 2003 U.S. Freestyle World Team. According to World Team Trials procedures, only the U.S. Nationals champion has the right to request a delay in the Championships Series. Joe Wells of Corvallis, Ore., the chairperson of the Freestyle Sports Committee, also participated in the conference call. Cormier's three-month-old daughter Kaedyn Imry Cormier was killed in an automobile accident on Saturday.
