The USOC's involvement in this program is an extension of work being done by the International Relations Committee, which is co-chaired by Dwight Bell and Dale Neuburger. Committee member Herb Perez is assisting with a similar initiative to redevelop sports programs in Afghanistan. "These meetings represent a meaningful first step in what will be a collaborative effort to rebuild the sports infrastructure in Iraq," said USOC Acting President Bill Martin. "As this strategy begins to take shape, we will be working closely with our National Governing Bodies and the International Sports Federations to identify the appropriate avenues through which the USOC can most effectively be of assistance." "The USOC is honored to collaborate with our colleagues from the International Olympic Committee, the Olympic Council of Asia, the U.S. State Department and the United Nations Development Program in creating positive opportunities for Iraqi athletes and in rebuilding Iraqi sports programs," added George. "Participation in sports can be a life-changing experience, particularly for youth, and we are proud to contribute to an initiative that will help foster inspiration and hope."
