Brandon Paulson of the Minnesota Storm has controlled this division since falling just short at the 2000 Olympic Trials. He made his name internationally at the 1996 Olympic Games, with an inspiring silver medal performance. He showed he belonged for good in 2001, when he won a World silver medal. Last year, he lost to the eventual World Champion from Russia at the World Championships. Later in the fall, he avenged that loss. His victory at the U.S. Nationals this year keeps him in the driver's seat in his quest to add a gold medal to his collection during the next two years. Lindsey Durlacher of the New York AC has emerged as the main challenger to Paulson, losing to him at the World Team Trials last year as well as at the U.S. Nationals the last two years. Durlacher is training at the USOTC in Colorado Springs, and placed second at the recent Pan American Championships. Durlacher won a NCAA silver medal at the Univ. of Illinois and has a long age-group record in the international styles. He has shown increased success at international events, and is shooting for his chance at the World level. One of the most exciting young challenger at this division is Sam Hazewinkel of the Gator WC, who placed third at the U.S. Nationals. Now at the Univ. of Oklahoma, Hazewinkel was placing nationally on the Senior level in Greco-Roman while a high schooler from Florida. His name should sound familiar; his father and uncle were Olympians in Greco-Roman and placed a number of times on the World level. He should be a strong challenger for a number of Olympic cycles. The question is whether he will be ready for the 2004 Olympics, or if his future will be realized in 2008 or 2012. The U.S. Army has a pair of national placewinners who are challengers at this division. Anthony Gibbons placed fourth at the U.S. Nationals and Michel Santos placed sixth. Both have a few years of success at this level. Another tough military athlete is Neal Rodak of the U.S. Navy, who was seventh at the U.S. Nationals this year. Rodak was a Div. III star at the Univ. of Chicago and has quickly progressed on the national scene once joining the U.S. Navy program. The impressive U.S. Olympic Education Center program (USOEC) at Northern Michigan Univ. has developed young talents including Joe Espinoza, who was fifth at the U.S. Nationals. Espinoza has been in the mix on the Senior level for the last three season and will be a tough draw for anybody in Indianapolis. Expected to drop down from 132 pounds is veteran Duaine Martin of the U.S. Marines, who was third on the National Team last year at 121 pounds. Martin placed fifth at the U.S. Nationals up a weight this year, but could be a World Team Trials finalist at the lower division. He has experience and talent, but has yet to claim a No. 1 spot in his career. NCAA finalists are also eligible to enter in Greco-Roman, but it is not expected that NCAA champion Travis Lee or runnerup Chris Fleeger will test themselves in the classic style in Indianapolis. Both did Greco-Roman in high school, and would be competitive if they so chose. Regional champions Lawrence Levinstone and Brian Dieher are not expected to be major factors against the Greco-Roman specialists at this division. Based on the last few seasons, the odds favor another battle between Paulson and Durlacher in the Championship Series. It will be an upset if Durlacher is beaten in the Challenge Tournament, but there are a few challengers who have the ability if they take a step up in performance. Martin dropping down in weight could be a major factor. If Durlacher does get another shot at Paulson, will he have something new to offer? Certainly, Paulson does not yet seem ready to give up his spot at the top yet. 2003 U.S. Greco-Roman Nationals results at 55 kg/121 lbs. 1st - Brandon Paulson (Anoka, Minn./Minnesota Storm) dec Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), 6-0 3rd - Sam Hazewinkel (Pensacola, Fla./Gator WC) dec.
