This weight class has been volatile, as a number of athletes have moved up and down because it is not an Olympic division. Toccara Montgomery of the Sunkist Kids has won the last two U.S. Nationals titles and Outstanding Wrestler awards competing here. However, Montgomery moved up to 158.5 pounds late last year and won the World Team spot there. An exciting star, her throw at the 2002 U.S. Nationals finals will long be remembered as one of the most spectacular in U.S. women's wrestling history. With Montgomery gone, past World Cup champion Katie Downing of the Sunkist Kids may be the top athlete here, based upon proven performance. Downing was second to Montgomery at the U.S. Nationals last year, then won the World Team Trials event. She was defeated in a Special Wrestle-off for the World team by Kristie Marano, who went on to take a World bronze medal in Greece. It seems that Marano has made the commitment to the 63 kg Olympic weight division for this year again. Downing has competed up at the highest weight class a few times this year and has had some difficulty with the larger athletes. She has done her best wrestling at 147.5 pounds including a 4-2 win over veteran Kaci Lyle of the Sunkist Kids at this year's University Nationals. Lyle competed at 72 kg last year, but, like Downing, is naturally suited for this weight class and may stay down. Placing second behind Downing at the World Team Trials was college wrestler Mollie Keith of Missouri Valley, and taking third on the national team was newcomer Cindy Herceg of Spartak. Keith has taken her lumps this year on the national and international circuit, including some losses to her own teammates, and hopes to recover with a strong U.S. Nationals performance. Herceg, a former track athlete, has limited international experience and is still making a name in this sport. College athlete Lisa Bisers has placed third at the last two U.S. Nationals, but has not entered the World Team Trials to fight for a spot on Team USA. Elena Mena of Neosho County CC has success at this division, including a silver medal at the Dave Schultz Memorial International. Veteran Jimi Dawn Hornbuckle of NLWC, once a U.S. Nationals champion, could be in the mix here. HIgh school stars Ali Bernard of the Minnesota Storm and Heather Martin of the Cleveland State WC are looking to make their first impact on the Senior level. Bernard was first and Martin third at the 2003 FILA Junior Nationals. Placewinners last year in Las Vegas included Brandy Golt of Missouri Valley and Stephanie Bolton of Hawaii, neither who have been active so far this season. Tina Arnds of Missouri Valley competed well at this weight during the college year. Other collegians to watch include Stephany Lee of the Rainbow Wahine WC, Emilee Murphree of Missouri Valley College, Randi Miller of Neosho County CC and Kelly Branham of Missouri Valley College. Lee was second at both the FILA Junior Nationals and the University Nationals this year, and has displayed great potential. Murphree and Branham have been impressive as freshmen in college, and are truly unknown quantities at this level. 2002 U.S. Women's Nationals results at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. 1st - Toccara Montgomery, Cleveland, Ohio (Sunkist Kids) won by tech. fall over Katie Downing, Pendleton, Ind.
