Eric Guerrero of the Gator WC is the defending U.S. Nationals champion, and qualified for the last two U.S. World Teams. Guerrero won a gold medal at the World Cup this past year. He placed seventh at the 1999 World Championships, his top World-level performance and was also second at the 1999 Pan American Games. Guerrero has been competitive in each of the major international events he has entered; his big step forward will be moving into the championship rounds. Guerrero dominated the USA Wrestling age-group levels, then won three NCAA titles for Oklahoma State, the kind of background that often leads to World titles on the Senior level. Placing second to Guerrero at the 2002 World Team Trials was Jesus Wilson, an immigrant from Cuba who received his U.S. citizenship over two years ago. Wilson was sixth at the 1993 World Championships, competing for Cuba, then defected a year later. Wilson competed at Upper Iowa Univ., a Div. III school where he kept his wrestling skills sharp while pursuing his citizenship. Wilson looked strong winning a silver medal at the 2003 World Cup. He also gave Guerrero a difficult time in their World Team Trials showdown last year, winning one of the three matches and showing the U.S. wrestling community that he was going to be a force. Jason Kutz of the U.S. Army holds the No. 3 spot on the national team and has become a major threat since joining the U.S. Army program. He had a disappointing U.S. Nationals last year, but rebounded with a strong performance at the World Team Trials. He has shown good skills at major international events Rumors indicate that 2000 Olympian and two-time World medalist Cary Kolat of the Dave Schultz WC may drop to this division for another run at Olympic glory. Kolat dominated the U.S. field from 1997-2000 at 138.75 pounds. When FILA reduced the number of men's weights to seven, Kolat was required to adjust. He has been training hard, and if he is able to get down to this weight class (the lightest he has been since his teen years), he could be a terror. Kolat lost to Jared Frayer at the Dave Schultz International at the next weight up, adding fuel to the speculation that he was coming down. Placing second the 2002 U.S. Nationals was veteran Eric Akin, who was a World Team member and two-time Olympic Trials runner-up who has proven competitive at this division. Akin wrestles with more abandon at the higher weight class, but is still giving up some size to some competitors. Danny Felix of the Sunkist Kids, also a past U.S. Nationals runner-up, is very competitive. Felix has been a talented freestyler since youth, and has trained considerably with World Champion Sammie Henson, the kind of influence that makes him even more dangerous. C.C. Fisher of Team Excel and Jeff Bedard of the U.S. Army were placewinners from last year's World Team Trials, earning National Team rankings. Both are solid in major competitions, and will be tough draws for anybody. Michael Lightner of the Sunkist Kids was a strong third at last year's U.S. Nationals. Lightner was a NCAA champion at Oklahoma and is among the talented young freestyler who could be a factor for the next few Olympic cycles. Mike Mena of the New York AC was a placewinner at last year's U.S. Nationals, but is expected to ultimately go down to 55 kg/121 lbs. Matt Azevedo of the Sunkist Kids and Jeremy Hunter of the New York AC have become talented freestyle athletes. Former Team USA member Yero Washington of the Sunkist Kids is making a strong comeback. Washington is now coaching at Columbia Univ., and has been entering the key training camps and tournaments. Others to watch include Eric Keller and Zach Roberson of the Cyclone WC. Penn State had both finalists at this year's University Nationals, Marat Tomaev and Josh Moore. 2002 U.S. Freestyle Nationals results at 60 kg/132 lbs. 1st - Eric Guerrero, Stillwater, Okla.
