Athletic leaders at Kent State University have issued a statement of complete support for its varsity wrestling team, which competes on the Div. I level in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Rumors have recently been circulated within Ohio and through the internet that Kent State was planning to drop its program. The following letter was sent to TheMat.com, in an effort to allow Kent State to refute the inaccurate reports and to move forward as a program. TEXT OF THE SUPPORT LETTER April 30, 2003 Sirs, I am following up on a rumor that Kent State is considering the elimination of our wrestling program. We are very concerned about that rumor; we have the full support of our administration for all of our programs, including wrestling. We believe that a nearby competitor may be responsible for the negative stories, and we will deal with that immediately. Please call Laing Kennedy, Kent State Athletic Director, if you want further verification. Sincerely, Cathy O'Donnell Associate Athletic Director Kent State University 330-672-8461 codonnel@kent.edu Kent State has fielded a varsity wrestling program since 1927.
