Brandon Paulson of the Minnesota Storm has won two World-level silver medals, one from the 1996 Olympic Games and another from the 2001 World Championships. This veteran star remains active in wrestling in pursuit of his first gold medal. Last year, his only loss at the World Championships was to the eventual champion from Russia. Paulson avenged that loss at the Kurt Angle Classic in the fall. He currently has an edge over his U.S. opponents, but will face a strong challenge again next year. Ranked No. 2 is Lindsay Durlacher of the New York AC, who placed behind Paulson at both the U.S. Nationals and World Team Trials in 2002. Durlacher is training at the USOTC in Colorado Springs, and placed second at the Pan American Championships. He is starting to make consistent solid showing at international events. A NCAA runner-up at Illinois, and a product of USA Wrestling's age-group programs, Durlacher has put himself in position to be the leader for the future here. Veteran Duaine Martin of the U.S. Marines is ranked No. 3, an Armed Forces champion who has been nationally ranked for many years. Martin competed up in weight for most of his career, but with the change to the current weight classes, the lightest division became within reach for Martin. He has won medals at the CISM World Military Championships, and has competed in countless international tours. Veteran Jeff Cervone of the U.S. Air Force, a former U.S. national champion, looks to rebound from a season sidetracked by injury. Cervone has been a top Greco-Roman competitor for years, going back to his high school years. He seeks his first spot on a U.S. World Team, just like Durlacher and Martin. The next tier of ranked challengers are young and emerging on the Greco-Roman scene. Neal Rodak stepped into national prominence after joining the U.S. Navy program. Rodak is paying his dues, getting in valuable international events and attending the right training camps. Sam Hazewinkel of the Gator WC, son of an Olympic Greco-Roman star, was competitive nationally in Senior Greco-Roman while in high school and is now in the college ranks. Hazewinkel remains active in Greco-Roman, hoping to keep his edge in this style while pursuing a college career at Oklahoma. Chris Conner of the U.S. Marines is a newcomer who holds the No. 6 national team rank. Michel Santos of the U.S. Army has been competitive in recent seasons, placing fourth at last year's U.S. Nationals. Joe Espinoza has improved as part of the USOEC University program in Michigan, capturing age-group national titles and placing in major Senior-level events. Others to watch include Anthony Gibbons of the U.S. Army, Leroy Vega of the Minnesota Storm, Willie Madison of the Gator WC and Gavin James of New Mexico. 2002 U.S. Greco-Roman Nationals results at 55 kg/121 lbs. 1st - Brandon Paulson, Anoka, Minn.
