April 25, 2003 - Matt Lackey of the New York AC, who grew up in Moline, Ill., continued his stellar season with a 3-2 win in the 74 kg/163 lbs. final over Tyrone Lewis of the Gator WC at the 2003 University Freestyle National Championships in Palatine, Ill. Lackey took a quick 3-0 lead over Lewis in the first period with an armspin for a takedown and two exposure points. Later in the period, Lewis scored two points on a gut wrench, but numerous times throughout the rest of the match, Lewis was unable to finish takedown attempts. Lackey's win propelled him to the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. In another action-packed match, Nick Simmons of Michigan State defeated T.J. Hill of Elite 10-9 at 55 kg/121 lbs. The two traded early leads with a flurry of takedowns and exposure points, but Simmons seemed to take control in the second period when he turned Hill twice for four points. But after an officials conference, the move was ruled illegal after officials agreed that Simmons had choked Hill. After the controversy, the score remained tied at 7-7. Hill once again took a lead with a takedown, but later in the match, Simmons lifted Hill and put him to his back for a 10-8 advantage. Down by one point late in the match, Hill got deep on a takedown attempt, but time expired before officials could award a point. Penn State teammates Marat Tomaev and Josh Moore, who have wrestled off for the 133-pound starting position numerous times over the past two years, met up in the finals at 60 kg/132 lbs. Tomaev completely dominated the match, scoring at will in par terre on his way to a 15-5 technical superiority win. At 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Jason Mester of Central Michigan had no problem in defeating Jerrod Sanders of the Gator WC, 6-3. Muhammed Lawal of the Gator WC showed the quickness that made him one of the top names in college wrestling this season. The NCAA All-American scored five takedowns in a 7-1 win over Greco-Roman champion Jake Clark of the U.S. Marine Corps at 84 kg/185 lbs. Nik Fekete of Michigan State also dominated his finals opponent, downing Matt Greenberg of the New York AC by a 7-0 score at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Neither of the defending champions, Sal Gonzalez of Fresno State and Chris Fleeger of the Dave Schultz WC, were able to place in this year's tournament. Also winning titles were Skyler Wright at 50 kg/110 lbs. and John Lockhart of Illinois at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Justin Nestor of the Pittsburgh WC won the Gorrarian Award for the most falls in the least amount of time. Nestor pinned four opponents in 11 minutes and 39 seconds. The champions of the 2003 University Freestyle National Championships have qualified to compete in the Olympic Hopes Competition in Budapest, Hungary, August 1-3, 2003.
