April 24, 2003 - The United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC) team from Marquette, Mich. dominated the 2003 University Greco-Roman National Championships in Palatine, Ill., scoring 69 team points, more than double that of the Orange Crush, who finished second with 27 team points. The USOEC team three champions, including Joe Espinoza at 55 kg/121 lbs., who also won a title at this event last year. Espinoza wore down USOEC teammate Eric Betterman in the finals before pinning him in the last minute of the match. Also winning titles for the USOEC were Willie Madison at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Harry Lester at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Madison defeated Nate Gallick of the Cyclone Wrestling Club 5-0 in the finals. Madison used a three-point throw in the second period to break open a low-scoring match. Lester also had to defeat a USOEC teammate for his title, topping Zach Lamano 5-3. Lester appeared to have the match under control in the first period, taking a 5-1 advantage from a three-point throw and two, one-point gut wrenches. Lamano battled back, scoring a takedown and a gut wrench of his own to narrow the gap to 5-3, but he was unable to muster any more offense from that point on. Jake Clark of the U.S. Marine Corps was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after dominating the competition at 84 kg/185 lbs. Clark won two matches by technical superiority and another by fall before defeating Joshua Millard of the USOEC 11-2 in the gold medal match. Millard, who is still recovering from knee surgery, was unable to match the physicality of Clark throughout the match, and eventually was worn down as Clark dominated the second period. Brian Kraemer came away with an inspired win at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., defeating Mike Mathers of the Peninsula Wrestling Club 6-3. Kraemer trailed 2-0 early in the match, but Kraemer was the beneficiary of a fleeing the mat call while also scoring one point on a gut wrench in the second period against a tired Mathers. Ken Cook of the Cyclone Wrestling Club captured the 74 kg/163 lbs. title with a 12-0 win over Anthony Weber of the Orange Crush. Cook outscored his five opponents 55-1 in the tournament. At 50 kg/110 lbs., Rico Ojorio of the U.S. Air Force pinned Skyler Wright in the first period and at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., Paul Devlin of the U.S. Army shut out Adam Wheeler of the U.S. Navy in a 5-0 victory. Phil Riedman of the Bison Olympic Developmental Club won the Gorrarian Award for the most falls in the least amount of time. Riedman, who placed eighth at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., pinned two opponents in one minute and 31 seconds. Winners of this competition, with the exception of 50 kg/110 lbs., automatically qualify for the 2003 U.S. World Team Trials in Indianapolis, Ind., June 20-22.
