Cumberland College in Kentucky claimed the No. 1 team spot in TheMat.com U.S. College Women's Wrestling Rankings for April 2003. Last month, Cumberland College and Missouri Valley College were tied in the No. 1 team spot. It was a busy month for women's college wrestling in the United States, allowing all of the teams and individuals an opportunity to prove themselves against their top competitors. Among the events in the past month were the USA Wrestling University Nationals, the USA Wrestling FILA Junior Nationals and the USGWA Can Am Freestyle Nationals. Cumberland College, coached by Kip Flanik, has four wrestlers with No. 1 individual rankings this month: Jessica Shirley at 121 pounds, Brooke Bogren at 130 pounds, Alaina Berube at 138.5 pounds and Toccara Montgomery at 158.5 pounds. Missouri Valley College claimed the No. 2 team ranking, but without a single No. 1 ranked athlete. Two Viking wrestlers, Leigh Jaynes at 138.75 pounds and Tina Arnds at 147.5 pounds, are currently ranked No. 2. Missouri Valley won the team title at the USGWA Can Am Freestyle Championships and was the top college team at the USA Wrestling University Nationals, placing second. UM-Morris, led by No. 1 ranked Patrice Crenshaw at 112 pounds, earned the No. 3 team ranking. Rounding out the top six teams were No. 4 Pacific Univ., No. 5 Neosho County CC and No. 6 Menlo College. Club programs at Hawaii, Princeton and Cal-State Bakersfield were also recognized in the team rankings. Neosho County displayed some strong individual talent with three No. 1 ranked athletes: Mary Kelly at 105.5 pounds, Elena Mena at 147.5 pounds and Alicia Mena at 169.5 pounds. Many of the athletes and teams in women's college wrestling will be on display at the U.S. Women's National Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., May 9-10. This event will give the college women a chance to challenge America's best Senior athletes.
