PRESTIGIOUS EVENT SERVES AS FIRST LEG OF TRIPLE CROWN TITLE AND FOURTH LEG OF FOLKSTYLE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE SERIES The USA Wrestling Folkstyle National Championships, to take place in Topeka, Kansas April 4-6, will provide talented young athletes an opportunity to battle for national honors and coveted awards. The event will be held in the Topeka Expocentre, which is a tremendous venue for wrestling. USA Wrestling/Kansas has done an outstanding job in the past putting on top-flight competitions for wrestlers and their families. This year's event will feature two days of wrestling action for four age divisions: Midget (born 1993-94), Novice (born 1991-92), Schoolboy/girl (born 1989-90) and Cadet (born 1987-88). This event has developed into one of the best youth wrestling events in the nation. 2003 marks the first year for Cadet participation in this event. The addition of this age group will create even more exciting action and provide many more wrestlers an opportunity to vie for national titles. Not only will these wrestlers be contesting for national championships within their age and weight classes, they will also have the opportunity to earn the first of three gold medals toward the prestigious Triple Crown Title. In order to win the Triple Crown Title, kids and cadet wrestlers must win gold medals at the Folkstyle National Championships and then go on to win gold at both the Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships. The Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals are in Enid, Okla. July 2-5. The Cadet Freestyle and Greco-Roman Nationals are in Fargo, N.D. July 19-26. Last year USA Wrestling honored six Triple Crown winners. The addition of a Cadet division to the Triple Crown competition will likely increase that number this year. The Folkstyle National Championships also serves as the fourth of five events in the Folkstyle Ultimate Challenge Series. This exciting series of events allows wrestlers between the ages of 9 and 15 to earn points toward the "Dominator Award," which is given to the top three point earners in each of three age divisions. In pursuit of these awards, wrestlers earn points by participation as well as by placing in the top eight of their weight class. The scoring system for the Ultimate Challenge Series awards 500 points for participation in each event, 1600 points for first place, 1200 points for second place, 1000 points for third place, 900 points for fourth place, 700 points for fifth place, 600 points for sixth place, 400 points for seventh place and 300 points for eighth place. Based on points scored in the first three events of the series (The Winter Classic in Danville, Ill., The Cotton Bowl Classic in Mesquite, Texas and Liberty Nationals in Liberty, Mo.), the top three athletes in contention for Dominator Awards include John Sims from Indiana with 5700 points (Age division I), Nick Leaster from Missouri with 6300 points (Age division II) and Eric McGill from Indiana with 5200 points (Age division III). Dominator Awards will be presented for Division I (9-10 year-olds) after the competition in Topeka. Following the Kids and Cadet Folkstyle National Championships, the Ultimate Challenge Series will wrap up for divisions II and III with the Virginia Challenge Middle School National Open in Norfolk, Va. April 11-13. For more information on the 2003 Kids and Cadet Folkstyle National Championships, visit TheMat.com or go to www.usawks.com.
