National Freestyle Coach Kevin Jackson has named three additional members to the United States team that will compete at the 2003 World Cup Wrestling Championship at the Bank of America Centre in Boise, Idaho, April 5-6. Among the team members who will serve as alternates is former Boise State All-American and 2000 Olympian Charles Burton (Meridian, Idaho/New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. The other two athletes added to the U.S. lineup are Teague Moore (Norman, Okla./Gator WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Jesus Wilson (Fayette, Iowa/Minnesota Storm) at 60 kg/132 lbs. "At the World Cup, which is a dual meet tournament, you always look at the individual matchups," said Jackson. "The alternates add to your flexibility during the dual meets. They are also very valuable if there is an injury to one of the starters." Burton was a member of the 2000 Olympic team, placing fifth in the Sydney Games at 85 kg/187.25 pounds. He won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Cup. He is also a two-time U.S. Nationals runner-up (2000 and 2001). He currently works as an assistant coach for the Univ. of Nebraska. He placed third in the 1996 NCAA Div. I Championships, competing for Boise State. Burton is originally from Centennial High School in Meridian, Idaho, where he was a 1991 state high school champion. "We are excited to have Charles Burton as one of our team members," said Jackson. "As a native of the Boise area, he is a big plus for our team. By placing fifth in the 2000 Olympics, he can compete with the best in the world. He is a veteran who can add depth to our team." Moore was a 2002 U.S. Nationals champion, and placed second at the 2002 World Team Trials. He placed fifth in the 2001 World Cup. Moore was a 2000 World University champion. He was a NCAA champion for Oklahoma State in 1998. Wilson placed second in the 2002 World Team Trials and fourth at the 2002 U.S. Nationals. He is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Cuba, having defected to the United States in 1994. Wilson placed sixth in the 1993 World Championships competing for Cuba. Wilson won a pair of Div. III NCAA titles competing for Upper Iowa Univ. "Moore and Wilson are up-and-coming stars on the national team, both who have proven that they are ready to succeed on this level," said Jackson. The addition of the three alternates gives the United States a 10-athlete team for the World Cup competition. All seven of the No. 1 ranked wrestlers in the United States have been named as the starters for the U.S. team at the World Cup. The U.S. team will be led by head coach Dan Gable (Iowa City, Iowa), a World and Olympic champion athlete and a legendary college and international coach. The assistant coaches include Greg Randall (Boise, Idaho), the head coach at Boise State, as well as Shawn Charles (Lincoln, Neb.) The United States will battle Cuba, Russia, Ukraine and Germany in this annual international dual meet championships.
