World medalists Alexander Leipold and Sven Thiele to lead strong 2003 German World Cup team in Boise

The German lineup for the 2003 World Cup Championships includes nine World competitors, headlined by 1994 World Champion Alexander Leipold at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 1995 World silver medalist Sven Thiele at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Germany is one of five world wrestling powers competing in this annual international dual meet championships, along with host United States, Cuba, Ukraine and Russia. The action will take place at the Bank of America Centre in Boise, Idaho, April 5-6. Along with his 1994 World title, Leipold boasts three World silver medals, a World bronze medal and three World Cup championships. He competed in the 1988, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games. Leipold has been a fan favorite at previous World Cup events. Thiele captured the 1995 World silver medal and also competed in the 1994, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2001 World Championships. He is a two-time Olympian, taking sixth place in the 1996 Games and seventh in the 2000 Games. Other Olympians and World Championships competitors on Germany's World Cup roster are Vassili Zeiher at 55 kg/121 lbs., Daniel Wilde at 60 kg/132 lbs. Ergin Urun and Sergij Kowalenko at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Andre Backhaus and David Bichinashvili at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Markus Hamann at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Zeiher competed in the 1998, 1999 and 2002 World Championships as well as the 2000 Olympic Games. He captured gold at the 2003 German National Championships. 2001 and 2003 German national champion Wilde placed seventh in the 2002 World Championships and sixth in the 2002 World Cup. Urun competed in the 1994, 1997 and 2002 World Championships and holds a 2003 German national title. Kowalenko competed in the 2001 World Championships and won a silver medal at the 2003 German Nationals. Backhaus has appeared in five World Championships since 1993. He placed second in the 1997 World Cup and holds a 1988 Junior World title. Bichinashvili represented Ukraine in the 1997, 1999, and 2001 World Championships and the 2000 Olympic Games. He placed second in the 2003 German Nationals. Markus Hamann placed seventh in the 2002 World Championships. Rounding out the German lineup is 2003 German National Champion Cengiz Cakici at 96 kg/ 211.25 lbs. Individual session tickets are on sale for the 2003 World Cup Wrestling Championship. There will be four sessions of action, featuring the best international freestyle wrestling teams in the world. For Sessions I and III, the session prices are $16 for adults and $13 for youth (2-18 years). For Session II, which includes Opening Ceremonies, the session prices are $19 for adults and $16 for youth. For Session IV, which includes the final bouts and the Closing Ceremonies, the session prices are $26 for adults and $24 for youth. The weekend will begin with a major youth wrestling competition, the World Cup Kids Open, set for Friday, April 4. Young wrestlers will be able compete in the tournament, then watch the world's best athletes at the World Cup. Medals from the World Cup Kids Open will be presented during the World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling. Participants must be USA Wrestling members. For information on the youth tournament, contact R.J.
