DALLAS, Texas - Oklahoma StateĀ¹s Head Coach John Smith was named Big 12 Wrestling Coach of the Year by a vote of the league's coaches, it was announced by the conference on Tuesday. After guiding OSU to an undefeated season at 17-0 and the 2003 Big 12 Conference crown, Smith led the Cowboys to the school's 31st national title last Saturday at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, Mo. The Pokes become the first Big 12 team to claim top honors in the league's seven-year tenure, and was the last team to win before the organization was formed in 1996. Smith directed his team to its fifth Big 12 Championship, more than any other league, that included six individual titles team. Oklahoma has won the other two titles. At the NCAA Championships, the Cowboys dominated the field, scoring 143 team points, the most ever scored by an OSU team in history, with seven wrestlers earning All-American honors. OSU shattered the previous team high of 117 points. The squad clinched the title during the consolation semifinals winning 10 of the 12 matches, including four third-place finishers. Smith coached two wrestlers to individual titles at the championships, now two-time champion Johnny Thompson and Jake Rosholt. Overall, Smith has coached 12 national champions and 28 All-Americans. It was the fourth NCAA team championship that Smith won as a member of the Cowboy program. In only his second year at the helm, Smith and his team brought home the national championship in 1994. As an assistant coach, Smith helped the Cowboys capture the crown in 1989 and 1990. Smith's affiliation with OSU dates back to his own wrestling career from 1983-88. The Del City, Okla., native finished his collegiate stint as the winningest Cowboy ever with a 154-7-2 mark. At one point, Smith owned a 90-match win streak record that his brother, Pat, later surpassed. Smith was a three-time All-America selection while posting back-to-back NCAA individual championships in 1987 and 1988 during his junior and senior seasons. He also tallied three Big Eight titles in the 134-pound division. The two-time Olympic gold medalist is the only wrestler awarded the James E. Sullivan Award, honoring the best amateur athlete for the previous year. While competing internationally, he recorded six straight World Championships, which included his two Olympic medals. For his outstanding efforts and accomplishments, he has been named to the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Smith also was rewarded when he was appointed as the coach of the 2000 Olympic freestyle team in Sydney, Australia. During the Iowa dual this past January, he was honored as one of the 10 inaugural inductees to the FILA International Hall of Fame. Smith has compiled an impressive 194-23-3 career record in 11 seasons at OSU.
