2000 Olympic champion wrestler Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) will come to Boise, Idaho to spark the Olympic spirit in the city. Gardner will re-light the Olympic cauldron in Boise, during the Opening Ceremonies of the World Cup Wrestling Championships at the Bank of America Centre in Boise, April 5-6. Announcing Gardner's special visit to the city is Boise Mayor Carolyn Terteling-Payne, as well as executives from the Idaho Department of Commerce. "We are honored that USA Wrestling has chosen Boise to host this prestigious competition," said Mayor Terteling-Payne. "To celebrate, we plan to re-light the spirit that made Boise the best celebration in the nation just over a year ago when the Olympic Torch Relay traveled across the nation. This cauldron was awarded to the city of Boise by the United States Olympic Committee in recognition that Boise had created the best celebration in the nation - a true honor." Gardner has been named Chef de Mission for the U.S. delegation competing at the World Cup Wrestling Championships. He will re-light the Olympic cauldron as part of the Opening Ceremonies for the event, set for 6:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. Gardner captivated the world with his unexpected upset victory over three-time Olympic champion and previously unbeaten Alexander Kareline of Russia in the Greco-Roman wrestling 130 kg gold-medal finals at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. This will be the first World title competition in an Olympic sport held in Boise. The national freestyle wrestling teams from the United States, Russia, Cuba, Germany and Ukraine will compete for the honor of being the best dual meet team in the world this year. Gardner became an instant hero world-wide after beating Kareline at the Sydney Games. The dairy farm boy from Afton, Wyo. was perhaps the most popular athlete to emerge from the 2000 Olympics. Gardner carried the U.S. flag in the Closing Ceremonies at the Sydney Games. He won amateur sports major awards for his triumph, including the Sullivan Award, the USOC SportsMan of the Year and the ESPY award. Gardner followed up his Olympic title with a World Championships gold medal in 2001, becoming the first U.S. Greco-Roman athlete to win both an Olympic and a World title. He has recovered from a serious snowmobile accident in February 2002 in the Wyoming mountains, where he suffered frostbite. Rulon spent months in a hospital in Idaho Falls. His spirit was strong, and his medical care outstanding. Just one year later, Rulon Gardner was back on the mat, with a new dream, to win a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. He will not be competing at the World Cup Championships in Boise because it is in freestyle, the other international style that he does not compete in. However, Gardner will be in Boise to support the U.S. freestyle team in action and help promote this major international competition. "We have selected Rulon to re-light the cauldron, because of all that he stands for, because of his spirit," said Mayor Terteling-Payne. "But it is also an opportunity for all of us to look at our every day lives, and make sure our spirit burns strong. We all must dream big, and work hard to achieve those dreams. I encourage all of you to come to the 2003 World Cup Wrestling Championship and witness a great hero with great spirit." The United States team will be outstanding, with each of the nation's No. 1 ranked wrestlers competing on the squad. Leading the way is 2000 Olympian Kerry McCoy, 2001 World bronze medalist Joe Williams and four-time undefeated college wrestling star Cael Sanderson. The U.S. team will also be led by its head coach, the legendary Dan Gable.
