QUOTES 125 - Travis Lee, Cornell "I thought the match went as I planned. I knew he was a tough wrestler on the top so that is why I chose neutral. I knew we needed to score a takedown before the third period. We stuck to our game plan." "I really haven't thought about the finals. I have taken them one match at a time. I didn't want to get ahead of myself; that is how you get beaten. I wanted to focus on each match as they came. I do feel good about myself. I feel I have wrestled a little better every match." "As a kid, I watched the NCAAs on ESPN. I've been to camps where the athletes talked about the NCAAs. It has been a dream for me to make the NCAA finals. There hasn't been a person from Hawaii that I know of who has been in the NCAA finals, or even an All-American, so it is a proud time for wrestling in the state of Hawaii. 125 - Chris Fleeger, Purdue "Me and Grant, it's the sixth time for us. He wrestled a really great match. There was a lot of strategy in the bout. We know each other very well. I got the one takedown I needed and an escape. Not much else happened." "The plan I set was pinning everybody, and having all my teammates become All-Americans. I am wrestlingwell. I don't think I've let anybody score on me." (about facing Lee) "I've never seen him wrestle. He had a tremendous season. It's pretty rare to have two guys undefeated at the same weight. I will be a tremendous match." 133- Ryan Lewis, Minnesota (the difference in the match) "Just going out and scoring earlier. I knew I wanted to do that. Then getting riding time really helped." "This is the only thing I have been thinking about since the last match (in last year's finals). As a senior, I wanted to get the job done this time." (about facing Thompson) "I like that. I get a chance to wrestle a kid who beat me last year in the finals, to avenge a loss. (Oklahoma State) came out and wrestled a great tournament. To have a chance to go head-to-head with Okie State is a great chance to help out with the team race." 133 - Johnny Thompson, Oklahoma State (about his close matches) "It's the national tournament. Everybody wrestles their best here. You have some battles. That is what you need to do to win the national championships." (about his late escape) "If you can't get away with 22 seconds left, you need to work on something." (about facing Lewis) "We wrestled once this year and he beat me. I look forward to wrestling him again. It is going to be good to go head-to-head for the team race." 141 - Dylan Long, Northern Iowa (about being persistent and patient) "That is the thing I have worked on. I'll wrestle guys like that. I'm learning, you have to keep trying. Eventually, they will get frustrated or come out of their stance. If you keep trying, sometimes you can get it. He is real explosive and likes to move and keep the pace high. I had to wrestle how I like to wrestle and be patient." (the key to the win) "Right at the end of the second period, I got a takedown with like five seconds left. I had to keep trying. He is good on his feet, so I had to keep moving." (about facing Teyon Ware) "I've never wrestled him before. It should be fun." 141 - Teyon Ware, Oklahoma "When we went overtime, I knew if I got the choice, I would choose down. Hardly anybody can ride me. I had to explode. It was all about how much I wanted to win." "Coming out of redshirt, I had some doubts. I didn't know if I was ready. I was hanging with my everyday partners. I knew if I could wrestle with them, I could go with anyone. My coach had faith in me, my parents had faith in me. I give credit to God for my success." (about facing Dylan Long) "It will be a tough match. I have to open it up. I have to wrestle like its my last match. Dylan Long is a great wrestler. He has been to this tournament before." "Like I said, I did have my doubts. My coach told me I can wrestle with anybody in this country. I wrestle with all Americans every day. If I can open up, I can beat anybody. A lot of people were doubting me, saying he's a freshman. Let's see him in the NCAAs. They were thinking I'd choke. But it's not over yet." 149 - Jared Lawrence, Minnesota (the key to the win) "The second period was huge. It was a huge takedown. He rides hard. It changed the complexion of the match. Those were big points." (about winning the semis) "It's a lot of pressure off. Sometimes you are thinking ahead. Now it's done. Theres just one more match. It's my senior year and I want to win it all here." (about facing Eric Larkin) "He has beat me twice this year. Hopefully it will be different this time. We have wrestled since we were kids. He has a good style. He's slick there." (about losing to Larkin) "It's great. I has kept me alive all year. Rather than sitting on top, I've now done the extra stuff, the three-a-day workouts, the stuff nobody knows about. I want it to be like this. I want to face the guy who beat me this year." 149 - Eric Larkin, Arizona State "The first period I got the takedown and rode him out. The takedown was a scramble position. The second period, I chose down and got an escape. In the third, he chose down and I rode him about a minute. I don't know what happened after that, but I won 4-3. I got a little tired. I was real cautious. I felt like I was in control." (about facing Jared Lawrence) "It will be a good one. He's the defending national champion. Hopefully I will come out on top. I knew I would wrestle him in the finals. I expected it. Hopefully I will get on him in the finals. We wrestled in the high school national championships and I beat him. (about a final chance to win a national title) "I have to hang it all out on the line. It is my last chance in college, the last chance for a national title. I have to leave it all out there." (about moving up in weight) "I feel great now. I don't worry about my weight. I get to eat all the time." 157 - Alex Tirapelle, Illinois "It was a tight match. We were even on the feet. There were no points. I wanted to make it a mat match. I was able to turn him over. I was fortunate." (about making the finals as a freshman) "Unbelievable. Not expected. I felt I could be an All-American. I wrestled well at the right time." (about facing Ryan Bertin) "Bertin and I wrestled two times. I got him the first time, and he got me the second time. They were both one-point matches. It should be a good match." 157 - Ryan Bertin, Michigan "Basically, I got a couple of scramble situations. I came out on top twice for takedowns. IO was really concerned about the cradle. He got it tight. I broke his hands after the two count." (about winning this match against Anderson) "A lot of it had to do with my health, mentally and physically. My foot was hurt the last match. I was a lot better mentally also. I wasn't going to let myself lose this match." (about facing Tirapelle) "He's a real rangy wrestler. It was a close match at the Big Tens. They were both close when we met. It will be determined by who was the better tomorrow." 165 - Troy Letters, Lehigh "It was close. I felt like he was tired. I knew if I could pick up the pace, he could break." "I have been having a great year so far. Hopefully it will continue tomorrow. Lackey is the best of the best. I am going to give him my best and see what happens." (about Lewis' tremendous skills) "Your defense has to be on completely. You have to anticipate when he is coming. He's so fast. You have to be ready for him." 165 - Matt Lackey, Illinois "I got the takedown with one minute left. That changed the pace. He wanted to keep it close, but that did not let him. I scored another with about four seconds left, a counter. I'd have liked to have gotten that earlier to have a cushion, but that is the way it goes." (about facing Letters) "I expect a hard fought match, a close match. It will be close match. I hope it's not close. I got three takedowns on him when we wrestled. That was three months ago, that's ages ago. I expect a hard fought match. He's on a roll. I won't worry about him too much. I h
