No. 1 Chris Fleeger, Purdue, 125 pounds (after pinning Seth Lisa of West Virginia, his second pin of the day) "Our team is in the top 10 right now. Another pin helps the team. We expect our team to be top 10 this year. Another pin helps us out." No. 1 Johnny Thompson, Oklahoma State, 133 pounds (after his pin of Matt Sanchez of Cal-State Bakersfield) "It's bonus points. We need to get as many as we can to reach our goal. The bonus points all help us to get there. I feel I am where I need to be. I am wrestling how I like to. I just have to keep rolling." No. 1 Teyon Ware, Oklahoma, 141 pounds (after a 5-4 win over Mike Messina of Sacred Heart) "He's tough. I could have done better. I have to pick it up next match." (about his first NCAA Championships) "It's a little nerve wracking. It's going to be tough, and I have to pick it up." unseeded Shane Cunanan, West Virginia, 141 pounds (after upsetting No. 2 Zack Esposito of Oklahoma State in overtime) "I got the coaches to help me out. They scouted him out and told me what I needed to do. The coaches always say, score at the end of the period. Ideally, I didn't want to go into the rideout." (about the win over Esposito) "It's big. It's just another match. It helps me reach my goal. My goal is to be a national champion. I needed that match to reach my goal. He was resting his hands; they were n ot real busy. I've done a bunch (of tiebreakers) this year, so I was ready. But you always want to get that takedown." Michigan State assistant coach Dave Dean (after unseeded Karl Nadolsky defeated No. 9 Ty Eustice of Iowa at 149 pounds) "He kept the game plan. That was the difference in this match from the others they wrestled." No. 2 Keaton Anderson, Ohio State, 157 pounds (after stopping Jeremiah Jarvis of UC Davis in the second round) "I feel good. That last match, I was a little tired. I did enough to win. The knee feels good. It hasn't been hurting. It's a plus. I am ignoring it and doing what I always do. This is my last chance this year. I have to do what I can do." No 2 Chris Pendleton, Oklahoma State, 174 pounds (after pinning Gary Cooper of Buffalo in round two) "I want an NCAA title as an individual and as a team. It will be my first national title ever. I have been close before. I want to prove I belong with the elite in college wrestling. The only way to do that is to win the NCAA title as an individual and a team." "If the fall is there, I will go for it. That is what coach Smith wants us to do - go big. Take chances. I got taken down, but that didn't matter. I went for the big one and got a five-point move." No. 1 Jon Trenge, Lehigh, 197 pounds (after defeating Ryan Bader of Arizona State) "I wrestled crappy. I didn't feel on. I'll get better. I always wrestle like this early in the tournament. I started wrestling at the end of the match there. I have to change levels better, shoot more and wrestle without thinking. I was thinking too much today." No. 2 Tommy Rowlands, Ohio State, heavyweight (after pinning Dan Howe of Cal Poly) "I'm feeling really good. I need to get some food, get to bed early and get focused. I feel like I should at nationals. If I can go seven solid minutes, I know I can win." Iowa State Coach Bobby Douglas (after his heavyweight Scott Coleman lost by injury default to Iowa's Steve Mocco) "When they call an illegal hold, when your wrestler can't continue, it's a disqualification. If we didn't continue, Mocco loses. We did the right thing. I didn't help Mocco. I don't think my wrestler would feel good and I wouldn't feel good about that. Coleman wanted to win. I didn't want Mocco to lose that way. He didn't do it on purpose. We did the right thing." Iowa head coach Jim Zalesky (about the Steve Mocco injury default win) "He had the near wrist and tried to turn the guy. The arm came off the back. That is where the move can become illegal. It wasn't intentional; he tried to turn the guy. He has to be smarter than that. Steve was scared about the situation after. You have to learn from that. Bobby Douglas is like that. He does things the right way. I wouldn't expect anything else from Bobby." (about his team's first day) "Some guys wrestled well; others didn't. Eustice turned his ankle. We are not winning the tough matches like we need to. There is always an individual aspect to this tournament. If they take care of themselves, then the team race will take care of itself." Oklahoma State coach John Smith (about the first day for his team) "It shows a lot about college wrestling. It's tough. There is a lot of parity out there. A lot of teams are joining the party. For our team, it was a good day. You bring 10 and you want a perfect round. It's hard to happen. The bonus points were important in these rounds. It didn't help us in Esposito's match. We chased him; we need to force the action. He has to regroup and fight back, just like Gruenwald and Holman. It is not a tournament where you can take for granted that your high seeds can get to that point. There are battles out there. There are new faces and new strategies. The parity is showing." Minnesota head coach J. Robinson (about the Gophers' first day) "Right now, it is going as the seeds say. We haven't done anything spectacular to change things tremendously. Tomorrow is the important day, with the quarterfinals and semifinals. We need to stay close, within striking distance. We need to get guys to the semis and finals. If we can get five through the quarters, that would be a big deal. If we get four into the finals, we have a chance."
