No. 1 Chris Fleeger, Purdue, 125 pounds (after pinning his first-round opponent) "I felt good out there, especially after making weight a while ago. It's nice to get a win for the team and set the pace. Every match, you go for the fall. You score the points first, then you go for the fall. Anytime you can end the match in a tournament like this, you go for it." Jack Effner, head coach of Cleveland State (after Rocco Mansueto upset No. 8 Skyler Holman of Oklahoma State at 125 pounds) "Wow! What a match. He had a slow start. Typically he is a slow starter. Once he has his motor going, he can go with anybody. He knows he can do it here. The pressure is off him. He is solid in every position. He just needs to get his motor going." No. 1 Eric Larkin, Arizona State, 149 pounds (about competing in first match, which he won by fall) "It's always the toughest on the nerves. Now that I broke the ice, I hope I keep wrestling like that. I don't expect it to be this easy. I have to stay confident and try to dominate." Greg Strobel, head coach of Lehigh Univ. (about his athlete Cory Cooperman not making weight) "We still have seven guys. Last year we had seven and placed seventh. I met with the guys and we talked about how we can still do well. We are disappointed he's not in the lineup. I wanted the guys to know we can do something without him." Jack Spates, head coach of Oklahoma (about No. 1 Teyon Ware's first win) "He did well. He wrestled strong and aggressive. The first match, you want to get past it. I was real pleased with his sharpness and his aggressiveness." No. 5 Jerrod Sanders, Oklahoma State, 149 pounds (after a last second victory over Rob Becker of George Mason) ""I have to pick it up and score. Like my coach says, I have to lay it out there. I was waiting, waiting. It was suddenly the third period. I felt I had to score then. If I wait like that, I will be on the consolation side." No. 1 Matt Lackey, Illinois, 165 pounds (after his first round win) "He's a good athlete. He was trying to keep the match close. He didn't have a lot of offense. He is a good athlete and could dodge some bullets. I just wanted to keep position and take good shots. At one time, I didn't do that. I almost got caught on my back. I was overextended a little bit. The first match is always difficult to get going. It is like that at every tournament. (about trying to win his first NCAA title as a senior) "My back is against the wall. I like the pressure. It makes me wrestle better. It makes me wrestle harder." Unseeded Ralph Everett, Hofstra, 174 pounds (after upsetting No. 1 seed Greg Jones of WVU in overtime) "I'm pretty excited. This was my best match all season. I wanted to wrestle smart and not give up any dumb takedowns. I wanted to work on my single leg." (about winning the coin toss and getting the bottom position) "I'm very confident down there. Our 197 pounder has the best ride in the nation. If I can get out on him, I'm confident I can get out on Jones." (about the rest of the tournament) "This gives me a lot of confidence. I don't see anybody out there I can't hang with and I can't beat.) No. 1 Jessman Smith, Iowa, 184 pounds (about his teammate Luke Eustice, who hurt his ankle in the first round win) "It is sad and heartbreaking to see one of my best friends and roommates on crutches. This is a rough tournament. You wrestle five or more tough matches and you have to make weight three times. It is an endurance tournament. The rest of the tournament will be the kind of test to see what he has in his tank. If he wants it bad enough, he can come back." No.2 Greg Parker, Princeton, 184 pounds (after his first round 15-2 decision over Tony D'Amico of Boise State) "I need to work on my offense a little in the next match and pick that up. I felt solid on top. I was trying to get after it. You know you are in the first match. It is good to get out there in front of this big crowd. I take it one match at a time and try to have fun." (about the loss by Greg Jones of WVU, who beat Parker in the 2002 finals) "You never know. Wrestling teaches you to focus at all times. That is what is tough about wrestling. Greg Jones is a great guy. There is a lot of pressure on him. Everybody is looking for the next superstar. I'm sure he will bounce back." No. 2 Tommy Rowlands, Ohio State, 286 pounds (after his first round win over Willie Gruenwald of Oklahoma State) "I always have a little problem keeping the nerves down in the first round. I went back to the hotel after the weigh-ins, and did not hang in the arena. That helped me. I felt it was a good first match to start with. I am ready for the rest of the tournament."
